Harrison scores 27 as LCU men win 6th in a row

Russell Harrison went off for 27 points and nine rebounds and Lubbock Christian University won its sixth game in a row Saturday, a 69-55 conquest of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Najeeb Muhammad and Rowan Mackenzie added 11 points apiece for LCU in the Lone Star Conference game at the Rip Griffin Center. The Chaparrals improved to 16-6 and 12-4 in the conference.

Harrison, the 6-foot-7 forward from Monterey, had single-game outputs of 33 and 28 points earlier this season.

Aaron Gonzales, Kendall Dow and Fletcher McDonald chipped in six points each for the Chaps.

UTPB (11-15, 5-12) got 17 points from Max Warren and 13 from Jalen King.

Grace Foster had 13 points and nine rebounds and Lubbock Christian University downed the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the Lady Chaps' first game since they had their record 113-game home win streak ended.

Audrey Robertson added 11 points and Carli Bostwick nine for LCU (16-8, 11-5 in the Lone Star Conference). Angelo State beat the Lady Chaps 60-57 on Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center, ending a streak that lasted more than eight years.

Alexus Quaadman led UTPB (10-13, 7-10) with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Kamari Portalis was next with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Wayland women 63

PLAINVIEW — Ashlyn Shelley scored 15 points, including a 3-point goal that gave Wayland Baptist breathing room late in a Sooner Athletic Conference victory over visiting Langston.

Kaitlyn Edgemon had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Wayland (15-9, 11-7). Cassie Onwugbufor and Jenna Cooper-Jackson followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Langston (13-11, 8-10) closed within 52-49 on a basket by Jamya Rogers with less than two minutes left, but Wayland answered with a game-ending 11-4 run in which Edgemon scored four points. Shelley's 3 made the lead 59-51 with 1:16 left.

Ayasha Thomas scored 12 points for Langston, and Rogers finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

PLAINVIEW — R.J. Mason and Tedrick Wolfe scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, and surging Wayland Baptist upset No. 3 Langston, handing the Lone Star Conference leaders their second loss of the season.

D'Michael Bellfield added 17 points and Parrish Hewitt 10 for Wayland (18-6, 13-5), which won its eighth game in a row. The Pioneers are in second place in the SAC, but still three games behind Langston (22-2, 16-2), which had a six-game win streak snapped.

Tristan Harper led the Lions with 22 points, and A.J. Rainey followed with 15.

Midland men 84

South Plains 75

LEVELLAND — Doug Young poured in a career high 31 points and Midland College won on the road at No. 11 South Plains College, dealing the Texans their second consecutive loss in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

Young, a 6-foot sophomore guard, came in averaging 21.9 points. Keonte Jones backed Young with 23 points for Midland (19-4, 5-4), which won its third game in a row after losing four straight.

Christian Coleman had 20 points and nine rebounds for South Plains (17-5, 5-3), which was coming off a 55-47 loss to No. 2 Odessa College. Jaden Harris and Ismail Habib added 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Midland women 41

LEVELLAND — South Plains College won its seventh game in a row, putting away Midland College behind 21 points from Celia Sumbane and 12 from Daiysha Brown.

Martyna Czescik added nine points and nine rebounds for the Lady Texans (13-7, 7-0).

Luisa Anderegg scored 22 for Midland (10-12, 5-2).
