The Duke of Sussex has described how “terrifying” it was to have his brother, the Prince of Wales, shout and scream at him at the Sandringham summit in front of the Queen during the Megxit crisis.

The duke’s claim is one of many revelations outlined in the final episodes of the couple’s Netflix docuseries, which also saw the pair condemn the treatment of Meghan at the hands of the media, and speak openly about her mental health struggles during their time as senior royals.

The final episodes also included lighter moments, such as when the couple mock the size of Nottingham Cottage, the residence on the grounds of Kensington Palace where they lived temporarily after their royal wedding.

Both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace declined to comment on the latest episodes. However, the royal family put on a united front when they attended the Princess of Wales’ second annual Christmas carol concert Thursday evening (15 December), just hours after the final episodes of the Sussexes’ bombshell Netflix series aired.

On Friday (16 December), the Palace also reiterated its dedication to “inclusion and diversity” while revealing that the Queen’s former lady-in-waiting, Lady Susan Hussey, apologised in person to Black charity founder Ngozi Fulani over comments she’d made two weeks prior.

The Sussexes also recalled the intimacy of their wedding, despite having the eyes of the world upon them.

“You know the world was watching us,” Prince Harry said. “But when we were actually at the altar, as far as I’m concerned, it was just the two of us.”

According to Meghan, the ability to drown out the noise, and just focus on one another, is something the couple prides themselves on.

“H and I are really, really good at finding each other, through the chaos,” she said. “When we find each other, when we reconnect to, like: ‘Oh, it’s you, it’s you.’ It’s not that the rest of it doesn’t matter, but the rest of it feels temporary.”

The relationships among family members ultimately took a turn for the worst, however, as the final three episodes document the treatment of Meghan at the hands of the press, and the couple’s claim the Palace declined to intervene.

Prince Harry also speaks candidly about his wife’s mental health struggles, and his regrets over how he and the royal family handled the realisation that Meghan was struggling with suicidal thoughts.

According to Harry, he “hates” himself when he looks back on the way he reacted, as he said he “dealt with it as ‘institutional Harry’ as opposed to ‘husband Harry’”.

The Duke of Sussex also criticised his family’s handling of Meghan’s mental health, as he claimed they “knew how bad it was,” and yet questioned why she couldn’t “just deal with it”.

Meghan echoed the sentiment, with the Duchess of Sussex recalling how she’d reportedly asked to “go somewhere to get help”.

She said the request was declined because “they were concerned about how that would look for the institution”.

According to Meghan Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, the press was to blame for the duchess’ declining mental health.

“I remember her telling me that, that she had wanted to take her own life. That really broke my heart,” Ragland said, adding that she blamed the media’s constant criticism of Meghan. “I knew, well, I knew that it was bad, to just constantly be picked at by these vultures, just picking away at her spirit that she would actually think of not wanting to be here.

“That’s not an easy one for a mom to hear. And I can’t protect her. H can’t protect her.”

Prince Harry also blamed the media, and the stress around the couple’s lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited, for the miscarriage Meghan suffered.

“I believe my wife suffered a miscarriage because of what The Mail did,” Harry says in the Netflix series.

One interesting moment during the final three episodes saw the couple criticise their living arrangements after their wedding.

As they entered into married life, the duke and duchess moved into Nottingham Cottage, which is located on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

However, despite sounding “regal,” Meghan said, in reality, their residence was “so small”.

Prince Harry told the camera in episode four: “As far as people were concerned we were living in a palace, and we were, in a cottage…,” and then, Meghan and Harry almost spoke in unison, agreeing: “We were living on palace grounds.”

While reflecting on their time in Nottingham Cottage, the duchess described it as a “chapter” in their lives “where I don’t think anyone could believe what our life was actually like behind the scenes”.

Despite their dissatisfaction with the home, the docuseries includes a number of photos of the pair enjoying the time they spent in the cottage, with pictures showing Meghan gardening and dancing.

Elsewhere in the final three episodes, the couple discussed their friendship with Tyler Perry.

The duke and duchess first met Perry when he temporarily offered them his home and his security team after they stepped down as senior royals.

The couple and Perry have remained close, with Meghan and Harry revealing they named Perry godfather to their daughter Lilibet.

Perhaps one of the biggest revelations in the final episodes took place when Prince Harry claimed that Prince William “screamed” at him during an emergency meeting called by the Queen.

In episode five, Harry details his account of an urgent meeting between senior members of the royal family at the Sandringham Estate in 2020. In the talk between the family members, a decision was made about the involvement of Harry and Meghan in royal life and their duties going forward.

During an interview, Harry claims: “It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me.”

According to Prince Harry, as his brother “screamed” at him, his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, “quietly sat there” to “take it all in”.

In the aftermath of their decision to step down, the couple reflected on their final moments as senior royals.

According to Meghan, there was one moment that stands out, when a crew member on her flight to back to Canada from the UK after her final royal appearance on their farewell tour thanked her for her royal service.

“I get on the plane and not the pilot, but whoever overseeing the crew, he came and he knelt next to my seat and took his hat off,” Meghan said.

“I just remember looking at him and he goes, ‘We appreciate everything you did for our country.’”

Meghan said that it was the “first time” someone recognised the “sacrifice” she had made.

“Not for my own country, for this country. It’s not mine,” she said.

The release of the latest episodes coincides with Kate Middleton’s second annual Christmas concert.

On Thursday, the Princess of Wales arrived at Westminster Abbey for Royal Carols: Together at Christmas, which will pay tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

For the occasion, the princess wore a maroon coat dress with padded shoulder details, while her and Prince William’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, wore a miniature version of the same outfit.

Following some back and forth about whether the royal family was contacted by Netflix over the first three episodes of the Sussexes’ docuseries, both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have declined to comment following the release of the remaining three episodes.

The silence comes as the royal family reunites at the Princess of Wales’ Christmas concert.

As for where the Sussexes see themselves now, the couple said that they view California as their home, as it is where their son Archie has grown up, and where daughter Lilibet was born.

“This is home to him, this is home to Lili, and this is our home,” Harry said, adding: “I get to do things with our kids that I would never be able to do in the UK.”

The docuseries also saw insight into the couple’s lives as parents, with Archie’s former nanny revealing the duke and duchess are “really hands-on parents”.

As for how Tyler Perry felt about being asked to be Lili’s godparent, the filmmaker said he was “honoured” by the request.

However, Perry admitted that he did have reservations at first, as he explained that he didn’t want to have to travel to the UK and participate in a ceremony with the rest of the royal family.

“I called them back and go: ‘Uh, hold on a second - does this mean we gotta go over [to the UK] and do all of that in church with [the royal family] and figure all that out? ‘Cause I don’t wanna do that,’” he recalled telling the couple. “‘Maybe we can do a little private ceremony here and let that be that, and if you have to do it there, then that’s okay.’”

Ultimately, the latest episodes of the docuseries add little additional context to the rift between the Sussexes and the royal family.

In a two-star review, Jessie Thompson writes that the “almost unendurable three additional hours of grudge-rehashing gives very little further insight into why the pair remain so furious at the royal family”.

The criticisms of the docuseries have focused on some of the harder-to-believe statements made by the couple, such as Meghan’s claim to have been surprised when she saw people lining the streets for her royal wedding in 2018. “I didn’t know people would be lining each side of the street,” she says.

The couple’s slight mocking of their temporary home of Nottingham Cottage has also sparked backlash, after they claimed people would have been taken aback to see where they really lived.

On social media, the reaction to the latest episodes has been split, with some praising the Sussexes for sharing their side of the story, while others have suggested the six-hour series did not include any new revelations.

“So I’ve just finished watching the Harry & Meghan documentary. And I think I must be watching a different programme to everyone else! I love them. Good on them for speaking up! Genuinely baffled at some of the comments I’ve been reading about them,” one fan tweeted.

As the Sussexes have concluded telling their story, business has gone on as usual for the rest of the royal family, who tonight reunited for the Princess of Wales’ second annual Christmas carol concert.

Following the concert, the Prince and Princess of Wales expressed gratitude to all who made the concert “so special”.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped make #TogetherAtChristmas so special, it was fantastic to celebrate inspiring individuals and outstanding organisations with you all,” a post from their official Twitter account reads.

At one point during the fourth episode, Meghan defended her extravagant New York City baby shower, with the duchess recalling how her friends had wanted to “shower her with love” during her pregnancy with Archie.

The final episodes of the docuseries also see cameos from some of the couple’s famous friends, including Serena Williams.

While reflecting on the duchess’ 2018 baby shower, the tennis star explained that the hope had been to give Meghan a fun and intimate moment amid the attention on her pregnancy.

However, according to Williams, looking back, she doesn’t think she “understood that there was no intimate moment that one could have” in her friend’s situation.

The docuseries also includes fun moments, such as the time dedicated to the couple’s royal wedding in 2018.

At one point, Clare Waight Keller, the former Givenchy artistic director who designed Meghan’s wedding dress, spoke of the pressure for the gown to be “flawless”.

Beyonce also makes a cameo in the final episodes, when the duchess reads out a text she received from the singer after her and Prince Harry’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

As for what the message said, Meghan revealed that Beyonce texted to check in, and to tell that she “admires and respects my bravery and vulnerability and thinks I was selected to break generational curses that need to be healed”.

Although a significant portion of the docuseries focuses on Meghan and Harry’s issues with the royal family and the institution, the Duke of Sussex admitted that there are things he misses about life in the royal family.

“I miss the weird family gatherings, when we’re all brought together under one roof for a certain time of the year. That I miss,” he revealed.

The docuseries also reveals that Prince Harry discussed the rift between him, his brother and their father when he returned to the UK for Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021.

According to Harry, it was “hard” having to have those conversations.

“It was hard, especially spending time having chats with my brother and my father who just were very much focused on the same misinterpretation of the whole situation,” he said. “So none of us really wanted to have to talk about it at my grandfather’s funeral, but we did.”

Although it seems likely the rift between Prince Harry and Prince William will grow as a result of the claims outlined in the Sussexes’ docuseries, Whoopi Goldberg has expressed her belief that the brothers will “figure it out”.

The View co-host shared her take on the situation, while admitting that she hadn’t watched the Netflix series, during Thursday’s episode of the talk-show.

“I haven’t watched it. I have not - I got other stuff on my mind. You know, it just - family is family, and they’ll figure it out,” she said. “They’re not boys. They’re two men. They’re not children. So they have to figure out their own stuff. Charles can’t fix that for them.”

Despite it all, Meghan and Harry appear as in love as ever, with a line from the duchess’ wedding speech ringing just as true today.

“Let’s call this a modern fairytale. Once upon a time, there was a girl from LA. Some people called her ‘an actress’.

“And there was a guy from London. Some people called him ‘a prince’. All of those people didn’t fully get it. Because this is the love story of a boy and a girl who were meant to be together.”

After revealing in the first three episodes of the docuseries that she purposely dressed in muted colours during the majority of her time as a senior royal, Meghan revealed in volume two that she wanted to “look like a rainbow” during her last week of royal engagements.

The duchess chose a number of colourful outfits for each of the engagements in March 2020, which marked her and Prince Harry’s final official royal appearances.

“I wore a lot of colour that week. It just felt like: ‘Well, let’s just look like a rainbow,’” she said of the colourful wardrobe.

Over the six-hour period, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex covered a lot of ground, with the couple candidly sharing their thoughts on everything from the size of their former home, Nottingham Cottage, to the happiness they’ve found with their family in California.

The final episodes of the Sussexes’ docuseries aired hours before many members of the royal family reunited at Westminster Abbey for the Princess of Wales’ second annual Christmas carol concert.

During the event, which was attended by family members including King Charles and the Queen Consort, the Prince of Wales made a speech, in which he quoted an extract from the late Queen’s Christmas speech about “togetherness”.

Amid the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s claims that Meghan was subjected to racism during her time in the UK, Buckingham Palace has revealed that Prince William’s godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, has apologised in person to Ngozi Fulani over comments she made to the Black charity boss during a reception at Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement the two women had met on Friday morning at Buckingham Palace: “At this meeting, filled with warmth and understanding, Lady Susan offered her sincere apologies for the comments that were made and the distress they caused to Ms Fulani.

“Lady Susan has pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the issues in this area.

“Ms Fulani, who has unfairly received the most appalling torrent of abuse on social media and elsewhere, has accepted this apology and appreciates that no malice was intended.”

The Palace previously announced that Lady Susan would be resigning from her role over her “unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments”.

“In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes,” the Palace said. “In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect. All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”

The united display by the royal family came after both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace declined to comment on the claims laid out in the final three episodes of the Sussexes’ docuseries.

The timing of the racism row coincided with the release of the first three episodes of the Sussexes docuseries earlier this month.

At the time, it was also noted that the Duchess of Sussex had her own history with Lady Susan, as the palace aide was assigned to help Meghan adjust to royal life before and after her and Prince Harry’s royal wedding.

However, Lady Susan reportedly had her doubts about the couple, as she once allegedly claimed the Sussexes marriage would “end in tears”.

While the couple made a number of shocking claims in the latest episodes, volume two also included sweet insights into their relationship, with the duke and duchess sharing a number of never-before-seen photographs from the early days of their marriage, when they were living in Nottingham Cottage.

In one photo, Meghan could be seen dancing in the doorway, while another showed Prince Harry painting their temporary home.

The couple shared the photos while reflecting on their time spent living in the “small” cottage.

The reaction to the six-hour docuseries has been largely divided, with many applauding the Sussexes for sharing their story, while others have accused the couple of rehashing old arguments.

The hosts of The View were in disagreement over the docuseries during Thursday’s episode of the talk-show, with Joy Behar questioning why the couple has not stepped away from the spotlight in light of the treatment of both Meghan and Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana.

“You would think after his mother was basically a victim of the paparazzi and all of the attention she got all over the place that he would shy away from all of that,” Behar said.

Friday 16 December 2022 17:55 , Chelsea Ritschel

The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg also argued that the rift between Harry and his brother Prince William is up to them alone to fix.

“Family is family, and they’ll figure it out,” she said. “They’re not boys. They’re two men. They’re not children. So they have to figure out their own stuff. Charles can’t fix that for them.”

Goldberg made the suggestion while admitting that she has not watched the Sussexes’ docuseries, because she has “other stuff on my mind”.

Friday 16 December 2022 18:30 , Chelsea Ritschel

There were also moments that the couple looked back on their time as senior royals with anger, and sadness.

In one scene, the duke and duchess reflected on the moment it seemed Meghan’s popularity would prove to be an issue among the royal family, with the series describing her and Harry’s concern after she was featured on the front page of a newspaper instead of the Queen.

“The issue is, when someone who’s marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight, or is doing the job better than the person who was born to do this, that upsets people, it shifts the balance,” Prince Harry said of the pivotal moment.

The royal family, who have declined to comment on the docuseries, conducted business as usual amid the release of the latest episodes, with the family reuniting for the Princess of Wales’ second annual Christmas carol concert on Thursday evening.

For the occasion, Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte wore matching maroon coat dresses, in what appeared to be a display of unity.

The Duchess of Sussex also discussed the ways in which her own fashion choices have been used to send messages in the couple’s docuseries, in which she recalled wearing a lot of muted tones when she was a senior member of the royal family so she wouldn’t stand out.

However, according to Meghan, during her and Prince Harry’s final week of royal engagements, she wanted to “look like a rainbow”.

The couple also spoke candidly about the moments after they’d officially concluded their royal duties.

According to Meghan, there was one moment that stands out, when a crew member on her flight to back to Canada from the UK after her final royal appearance thanked her for her service.

“I get on the plane and not the pilot, but whoever overseeing the crew, he came and he knelt next to my seat and took his hat off,” Meghan said. “I just remember looking at him and he goes, ‘We appreciate everything you did for our country.’”

Meghan said it was the “first time” someone recognised the “sacrifice” she had made.

“Not for my own country, for this country. It’s not mine,” she said.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of Harry & Meghan was the celebrity cameos, with Serena Williams and Tyler Perry interviewed for the six-part Netflix series.

The docuseries also included a virtual cameo from Beyonce, who texted the duchess to commend her bravery.

In the scene, a surprised Meghan tells Harry that she just received a message from the singer, before admitting she “still can’t believe she knows who I am…”

As for what the message said, Meghan revealed that Beyonce reached out to tell her she “admires and respects my bravery and vulnerability and thinks I was selected to break generational curses that need to be healed”.

The series also included heavier moments, such as the scene where Harry and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland reflected on Meghan’s mental health struggles.

According to Prince Harry, he “hates” himself when he thinks of the way he reacted to his wife’s admission that she was having thoughts of suicide, as he said he dealt with it as “institutional Harry” as opposed to “husband Harry”.

The couple also spoke candidly about their legal battles with the media, with Prince Harry revealing that he blames Meghan’s miscarriage on the stress of the couple’s lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited.

“I believe my wife suffered a miscarriage because of what The Mail did,” Harry says in the Netflix series.

According to the couple, they have found happiness in the US, with Prince Harry noting how California has become home to their children, son Archie and daughter Lilibet.

“Just seeing Archie running across the lawn with this big smile, this is the world that he knows. He spent his first five months in Windsor. That was it. This is home to him. This is home to Lili. And this is our home,” the duke said during episode six of the series. “I get to do things with our kids I never would be able to do in the UK.”

Saturday 17 December 2022 02:30 , Chelsea Ritschel

Prince Harry appears to feel especially close to California because, as he noted, his mother once considered living in the state.

As he reflected on the changes he’s gone through, he said: “I came here because I was changed. I changed to the point that I’d outgrown my environment,  therefore this was the most obvious places to come.”

“This is one of the places my mum was going to end up living, potentially, you know,” he added.

Saturday 17 December 2022 03:30 , Chelsea Ritschel

As for whether the couple sees the rift between themselves and the royal family closing, Prince Harry said at one point that he’s had to “make peace” with the idea that they may never get an apology.

“I’ve had to make peace with the fact that we’re probably never going to get genuine accountability or a genuine apology,” he said, adding: “You know, my wife and I, we’re moving on. We’re focused on what’s coming next.”

Despite some notable moments, some viewers felt the docuseries failed to reveal anything new about the couple’s decision to step back from the royal family.

In a two-star review, Jessie Thompson described volume two of the series as an “almost unendurable three addtional hours of grudge-rehashing”.

One of the ironies, according to Jessie Thompson, is that “since their departure, Meghan and Harry’s relevance rests on their shrinking proximity to the royal family”.

“Having left so sensationally, they can now only maintain the public’s interest by taking carefully calculated chunks out of the firm – something they’ve doubled down on here, with Harry’s memoir, Spare, still to come in January. They’re trapped in a royal soap opera of their own creation – feeding the exact beast they so longed to escape from,” she writes.
