Harry Styles is the latest celebrity to stand up for reproductive rights and advocate for action against the Supreme Court draft opinion that calls to overturn Roe v. Wade — a move that would eradicate safe abortion access for millions of women.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday, May 18, Harry expressed frustration over the state of the nation. Although he didn’t name any specific states or laws, he condemned those that are poised to turn the clock back on reproductive health by nearly 50 years.
“There’s a lot of people who are taking the right steps to try and make positive things [happen], and I think obviously people who don’t like that are kind of clawing to grapple back any ground that they feel like they’ve lost, which never belonged to them in the first place,” the “As It Was” artist said. “I don’t think anyone should be able to make decisions about anyone else’s body.”
Harry went on to question how far the United States will go to restrict reproductive freedoms. “I don't really know where that ends. Someone needs an operation and someone can decide that they can't have it? It makes no sense to me,” he said. “It’s just so backwards… It’s quite scary to see how far backwards we’re going in a lot of ways.”
“There should be backlash and uproar for these things,” Harry concluded.
In the wake of Justice Samuel Alito’s leaked draft opinion, stars such as Phoebe Bridgers, Halsey, Selena Gomez, and Olivia Rodrigo have used their platform to fight for abortion rights. The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade not only jeopardizes abortion access, but could also put other monumental cases at risk, such as those that legalized same-sex marriage and contraceptives, according to NPR.
