Harry's preparing to close permanently later this month in Aiken

Jan. 5—The days are numbered for Harry's Local Bar & Restaurant.

According to an announcement posted on the eatery's Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, the business at 1208 Whiskey Road in Aiken will be closing for good soon.

"It is with great sadness we must inform our family and friends that January 27, 2023 will be our last day of business," the message stated. "Due to unforeseen and unavoidable issues with our building, we are no longer able to stay open. We will continue to have Trivia on Wednesdays until this date.

"Thank you for 19 amazing years of business and we hope to see everybody around! We couldn't have done it without you," the post concluded.

Michael Stern, who wrote about Harry's in his Taste of the Town column for the Aiken Standard last fall, described Harry's as "a tavern where people come to crack crabs, hoist brews and let their hair down."

Harry and Lorraine Myers opened Harry's in 2004 after moving to Aiken from Pennsylvania.

The seafood served by the restaurant "is as good as anywhere in town," according to Stern, and includes crab legs, shrimp and oysters.

Among the other items on the menu are prime rib, sandwiches and salads.

"The haddock sandwich features a moist, sweet, foot-long filet," Stern wrote in Taste of the Town. "The cook can broil it, although frying creates a micro-thin coat that is hard to resist. The bun is a bore, but who cares? It's really only a cushion for the fish."
