Hartford City man charged with selling meth to police informant

HARTFORD CITY, Ind. — A Hartford City man is accused of twice selling meth to a police informant.

Timothy Allen "Red" Hartley, 58, was charged last week in Blackford Circuit Court with two counts of dealing in cocaine, along with single counts of possession of meth, possession of a narcotic drug, unlawful possession of a syringe, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia.

According to court documents, Hartley sold meth to the informant on March 14 and again on March 29, when officers received a warrant to search his South Jefferson Street home.

Seized during the raid, an affidavit said, were a plastic bag containing meth and an assortment of drug-related paraphernalia, including hypodermic syringes, a set of digital scales and glass smoking devices.

The document stated Hartley was found be in possession of cash, identified through registration numbers as the same currency provided to the informant before the alleged transactions.

The informant said Hartley reported he frequently went to Muncie to purchase controlled substances.

According to the affidavit, Hartley at first maintained he "only uses methamphetamine but denied ever selling or distributing illegal substances."

Later he reportedly said he at times "helps and gets high with friends." He said he had earlier that day injected a combination of meth and heroin.

The dealing charges against the Hartford City man are a Level 4 felony, carrying up to 12 years in prison, and a Level 5 felony with a maximum six-year sentence.

Hartley — being held in the Blackford County Jail under a $5,000 cash bond — has received an Aug. 13 trial date in Blackford Circuit Court.

According to court records, Hartley has been convicted in Indiana of crimes including possession of meth (twice), theft, driving while intoxicated and invasion of privacy.

He was also convicted of sexual assault of a child in Colorado in 1993.
