Hartford HealthCare steps up office consolidation with $14M Farmington purchase

Hartford HealthCare is stepping up the consolidation of its office space, purchasing one of the region’s largest vacant office buildings for $14.25 million.

The parent of Hartford Hospital and six other hospitals in Connecticut said the acquisition of 9 Farm Springs Road in Farmington — once leased by aerospace giant United Technologies Corp before its merger in 2020 with what became Raytheon Technologies — will allow the health care system to reduce its office “footprint” by 60%.

Hartford HealthCare declined comment Tuesday on how many employees would eventually work in Farmington, but it is likely to be hundreds, given the 133,000-square-foot size of the structure.

The consolidation comes after Hartford HealthCare opened its new headquarters at 100 Pearl St. in downtown Hartford. The health system spent $14 million on renovations and has moved 550 employees into the new quarters, a boost for downtown in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Bringing employees to downtown Hartford was part of a consolidation of nearly a dozen offices in Newington, Wethersfield, Farmington and on its Hartford Hospital campus, freeing up more space for patient care.

A similar strategy also drove the purchase of the office building in Farmington, constructed in 1982.

“Hartford HealthCare is constantly evaluating its real estate strategy,” the health care system said, in a statement. “Hartford HealthCare has worked to bring together many different offices and leases into strategically located system support offices across the state.”

“Moving different offices to one location at 9 Farm Springs creates a more engaging work environment, lowers operating and utility costs and generates millions in savings in overhead, while freeing up important clinical space for patients,” the statement said.

The 9 Farm Springs property, on more than 13 acres, has been vacant since July, 2022 when a lease expired and all Raytheon employees had been relocated to the aerospace and defense company’s new headquarters, now in Arlington, Virginia.
