New Hartford man faces 3rd arson charge in month after fire at former Word of Life Church

A New Hartford man was arrested for the third time in less than a month on arson charges after he allegedly set fire to the former Word of Life Church on Oneida Street in Chadwicks.

Mark E. Palmano, 43, was arrested Monday following the fire at the former church, which occurred just before 10 p.m. Sunday night, according to a statement from the New Hartford Police Department.

The former Word of Life Church, where a teenager was beaten to death and another seriously injured in 2015, was listed for sale in January 2021.

Willowvale Fire Company responded to Sunday’s fire, which officials said was contained to the church’s basement.

Palmano was taken into custody and has been charged with third-degree arson.

He was arraigned Monday in the Town of New Hartford Court and remanded to the Oneida County jail, due to the two prior arson charges filed against him.

Palmano is also facing charges after a December fire damaged Mangia Macrina’s Wood Fired Pizza and another fire, which occurred three days later, damaged a nearby vacant building — the former home of Zebbs Restaurant.
