Hartland Village Trustee Michael Meyers dies at 76

Village of Hartland Trustee Michael Meyers died Thursday after a two-month hospitalization. He was 76.

Meyers had served on the Village Board since 2000, most recently winning reelection in April. As a trustee, he was instrumental in bringing improvements to the path along the Bark River and the pond at Nixon Park. He also served on the Environmental Corridor and Open Spaces Committee, the Delafield/ Hartland Water Treatment Facility Board and the Board of Review.

Meyers was also well-respected in the local business community as the owner of the electronics store Battery Products Inc.

Before his service on the Village Board, he served on the village Chamber of Commerce from 1997 until 2000 after moving to the village in 1996.

"All of his work, whether in Nixon Park or along the Bark River, is a testament to the hard work he put in to making Hartland a better place," said Village President Jeffrey Pfannerstill. "He was always a steward of the money. He considered it not the board’s money but the taxpayers' money. He made sure every penny we spent we spent properly. He has been a huge part of keeping taxes low but still providing those great services and buildings to our great community."

Pfannerstill added that many community members and current and former municipal employees have reached out since the news has spread.

The village plans to honor Meyers by placing black ribbons on the Village Hall and Police Station and on the Fire Department signs. Additionally, the board plans to place a ribbon and flower arrangement on Meyers' seat at the Aug. 22 Village Board meeting.

"The two things I’m hearing the most from those who have reached out are that he was just a great guy and that his absence will leave a big hole in the village," Pfannerstill said. "There’s going to be a void left there. He was a special person to work with. He was unique, and he was fun to talk to, and it’ll leave a big hole in the village and big hole in our hearts."

Visitation is scheduled for 10 until the 11:30 a.m. Celebration of Life on Friday, Aug. 19, at Evert-Luko Funeral Home, 170 Warren Ave., Hartland.

He is survived by his son Scott (Susan), daughters Kami (Mike) Merlino and Megan (Lucas) Raschke; grandchildren; brothers Edd and Chuck (Holly); other relatives and friends.

Filling the vacancy

Pfannerstill said Meyers' seat will eventually be filled, but for now will wait to start that process to allow for proper mourning time.

"This is going to leave a huge hole in the village," he added. "Though he will be replaced because the village has to do that, there is no replacing Mike. He is a great guy and unique individual, and he will be missed dearly by many of us."

Under village ordinance, the village president will bring a name a forward that must be voted on and approved by the board.

This is the second time this year that the board will need to fill a vacancy. In May, Robyn Ludtke resigned from her position after she announced she was moving out of the village. Trustee Tim Hallquist filled the vacancy.
