Hartville Council approves contract for police body and cruiser cameras

Hartville Village Council

Monday meeting

KEY ACTION: Approved a five-year contract with Axon for the purchase and maintenance of police body and cruiser cameras.

DISCUSSION: Police Chief Kevin Moore said the current five-year contract with Axon expires at the end of 2024. He said that the new deal will cost $23,943 annually, or $119,715 over the duration. The current five-year contract included a $33,000 payment in the first year and $10,081 per year thereafter. Moore said Axon will waive the last payment of the current contract if the village committed to a new one before the end of 2023, resulting in a savings of roughly $23,000. He added that the new cameras have “dramatic technical upgrades,” including more water protective components, license plate readers, and the ability for dispatchers to view officer activity in real time and provide assistance if needed. Councilman Frank Gant requested a special meeting to further discuss the contract.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Established a street income tax fund for receipts from the 10-year, 0.05% income tax levy for street paving passed by voters in November.

  • Approved the village’s $6.9 million 2024 annual appropriations budget, a roughly $700,000 increase over 2023.

  • Approved a contract with Carol Brown Cleaning Services.

  • Approved a one-year contract with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for police dispatching service.

UP NEXT: Meets at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at Village Hall, 202 W. Maple St., and online at www.facebook.com/VillageofHartville.
