Harvest Festivals, concerts and more: 5 weekend events to check out across Newport County

The spooky season has come to a close and we have a little time to breath before holiday season-related events truly start up, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do.

Sure, you could head outside and rake leaves, but we all need balance in our lives, so that means getting out and enjoying the weekends. And while the weather is getting colder, the bright side is that events are moving indoors, meaning there's no need to worry about rain dates or cancelations when the rain starts falling on another weekend.

The weekend brings us a harvest festival, concerts for everyone and a chance to join in a community event aimed at promoting peace.

Check out what's happening and state making your plans.

The afternoon concert will include such songs as “I Hope You Dance,” “High Hopes,” “Let It Be,” “Feelin’ Good” and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” And, of course, the audience is welcome to join in the singing!

Community prayer

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Newport, invites the entire community to join hands together at Washington Square, in Newport on Sunday, at noon. United by a common desire and a vision of World Peace. Participants are invited to take 15 minutes out of their busy schedules to stand side-by-side quietly in meditation or silent prayer. You can even visualize people of all nationalities holding hands across the globe, uniting in a powerful stand against negative forces on this planet that seek to keep humanity divided. As a community, let's set an example.

This event is open to anyone who has grown weary of the disharmony in our world and is feeling helpless to stop the wars and senseless killing. Rev. Jaegil Lee, pastor from St. Paul’s will share a Peace Prayer he wrote and we will raise our voices to sing "Let There be Peace on Earth. "

Newport Live will be presenting Anna Mieke at the Colony HouseonWashington Square in Newport on Friday at 7 p.m.

General Admission tickets are $35 and available through EventBrite and via the Newport Live website. The award-winning folk artist from Ireland. will be joined by Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, Adelyn Strei, who will be opening. Beer and wine will be available for purchase courtesy of Ragged Island Brewing and Greenvale Vineyards.

Mieke’s songwriting and enveloping compositions have asserted her as a vital voice amongst Ireland’s alt-folk genre. The Irish multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based in Wicklow, Ireland, toes the line between folk forms and vivid dreamscapes, drawing on traditional and contemporary motifs. The lyrically ornate and instrumental delicacy of her work, alongside flowing atmospheric arrangements, contributes a challenging, emphatic and new voice to alt-folk.
