Hasbro Is Dropping the ‘Mr.’ for a Gender-Neutral Potato Head Family Toy
Mr. Potato Head was introduced in 1949 as toy kids would want to play with, instead of a food they would want to eat. In 1995, it became one of the stars of Toy Story and, suddenly, it seemed like every child had one of the buildable toys with silly expressions and accessories. It’s not going anywhere — however, Hasbro has decided to make the toy gender-neutral.
This year, Hasbro is dropping the “Mr.” from “Mr. Potato Head” in effort to make sure that all feel welcome to the Potato Head world. There will be a new logo and branding, along with a whimsical color palette. The change also brings a new product, the Create Your Potato Head Family, to appeal to the modern consumer.
The inclusive set will include two large potato bodies, one small potato body, and 42 accessories, so kids can build two parents and a baby. The idea here is that kids can build their family, no matter what that looks like. So you can expect to find expressive accessories like a mustache, glass, ponytail, and a range of hair colors.
Most of the parts are compatible with other Potato Head toys, in case you were worried your older Mr. Potato Head pieces would go to waste. The Create Your Potato Head Family set will be launching in fall 2021. You’ll be able to shop the set at most major online retailers for $19.99, a PR rep confirmed to Best Products. The pieces were designed for little hands and are intended for ages 2 and older.
The original Mr. Potato Head pieces first came out in 1952, followed by Mrs. Potato Head the following year. It’s the end of an era for a more modern toy.
