Hashtag 'ThankYouPete' trends on Twitter after Buttigieg suspends presidential bid

INDIANAPOLIS – Shortly after former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced that he was ending his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, the hashtag #thankyoupete began trending nationally on Twitter.

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who rose from political obscurity made history as the first openly gay man to win delegates in the race for the nomination of a major political party.

His exit from the race comes a day after his disappointing fourth-place finish in South Carolina and two days before Super Tuesday, when he was expected to continue to struggle amid the dominance of Sen. Bernie Sanders and resurgence of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Buttigieg is heading back to South Bend, Indiana, where he plans to deliver a speech around 8:30 p.m., his campaign told IndyStar.

"Pete got into this race because our politics weren’t working," a campaign aide told IndyStar. "Our country was torn apart; Washington wasn’t able to deliver solutions for everyday Americans; systemic issues demanded urgent action."

President Donald Trump tweeted that Buttigieg's decision - which comes before Super Tuesday - would be a boon for former Vice President Joe Biden and the start of the end of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders presidential bid.

"Pete Buttigieg is OUT. All of his SuperTuesday votes will go to Sleepy Joe Biden. Great timing. This is the REAL beginning of the Dems taking Bernie out of play - NO NOMINATION, AGAIN!"
