These haunted attractions in Springfield area provide thrills, chills to brave souls

Halloween is just around the corner, and that means it's time for thrill-seekers to seek out the area's spookiest attractions.

The Springfield area doesn't disappoint, either, with its own share of haunted houses and hayrack rides providing hair-raising action.

Here's a list of haunted attractions to check out in the Springfield area.

Boo Crew Haunted House

Where: 11083 Buckhart Road, Mechanicsburg

General admission: $25

Hours: 6:30-10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in October.

More information: More than 100 volunteers work at the Boo Crew Haunted House every night. Owned and operated by the Rochester Lions Club, all proceeds from the haunted house go to charity. Charities that have been received proceeds in the past from the Boo Crew include the Family Service Center's Christmas party for foster children, Rochester High School college scholarships, Rochester High School Outstanding Student Awards, Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation and others.

The Haunted Woods of Creek Hill

Where: 3078 County Road, 1550 E, Mount Auburn

General admissions: From $5

Hours: 7-11 p.m. Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29.

More information: This is not a haunted house but a trail spread out over almost 10 acres of wooded landscape north of Mount Auburn. Some of the proceeds go to Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry and food baskets during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

217 Terror Haunted House

Where: 221 Rawlings St., Roodhouse

General admission: $25

Hours: From 7 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Sundays in October.

More information: The 217 Terror Haunted House runs with all volunteers. A Family Friendly Fear Festival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event is free to the public. Voluntary donations collected at the event go to the Roodhouse Fire Department's fund to buy Christmas gifts for local children. A Back the Blue event will be held from 7to 10 p.m. Sunday to raise money for the Roodhouse Police Department Youth Fund.

Carter Brothers Haunted Hayrides

Where: 1580 S. Sherman Blvd., Springfield.

General admission: $10

Hours: 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in October.

More information: The Carter Brothers' event is a favorite in the Springfield area. According to its website, http://www.carterbroshauntedhayrides.com/, the attraction is in its 39th year.

Terror on the Square

Where: 119 S. Seventh St., Petersburg.

General admission: From $23

Hours: Remaining days are Oct. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 31. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 7-10 p.m. Sunday.

More information: According to Terror on the Square's ticket site, the attraction "is a unique professional haunted tour with Disney-style illusions set in an actual 1930s funeral home. This is a guided tour with many ghost illusions and special effects that bring people from all over the state and farther to experience firsthand." ... Groups are limited to six people.
