York Hockey Team raises funds to help York Hospital Cancer Patients
YORK, Maine — After skating through a strong season and finishing as the Class B South Regional Runner-Up, the York High School Boys Hockey Team is also helping local cancer patients be strong. The team donated proceeds from this year’s “Pink in the Rink” fundraiser to the York Hospital Living Well With Cancer Fund. The proceeds topped $550, with monies raised through raffles, a bake sale, and a donation basket.
Dr. Patrick Taylor, York Hospital president & CEO, and Susan Kelly-Westman, oncology social worker, accepted the generous donation and thanked the team first-hand on Friday, March 24.
“It really warms the heart to see these young men raising money for cancer patients in our community,” said Dr. Taylor. “Many team members skated in honor of family and friends who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis and we applaud the York High School Boys Hockey Team for their compassion and generosity,” he added.
Susan Kelly-Westman explained that the Living Well With Cancer Fund at York Hospital helps patients achieve steady improvements in mind, body and spirit in pursuit of total wellness. The fund provides assistance such as prosthetics, wigs, gas cards for travel between treatments, and also educational sessions to promote health and healing. “We’re incredibly grateful to all the boys on the hockey team as well as their coaches and parents for continuing to support this important fund at York Hospital through the annual ‘Pink in the Rink’ tournament,” said Kelly-Westman.

HAVEN hosts 12th Annual Kids Are Our Business Breakfast
RYE — HAVEN invites all community members to the 12th Annual Kids Are Our Business Breakfast on Friday, April 14, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, N.H. Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., followed by breakfast, networking, and a program to begin at 8:30 a.m. This popular breakfast event shines a light on HAVEN’s prevention education programs, offered throughout southeastern New Hampshire.
Young people often suffer long-term negative physical and behavioral health consequences from witnessing or experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, and child abuse. At this year’s breakfast, we will be discussing youth mental health and highlighting all the work that HAVEN is doing to support vulnerable youth in our community.

York Hospital to present ‘Depression & Anxiety in Older Adults’
YORK, Maine — York Hospital’s Center for Older Adults will present a lunch and learn program, “Depression & Anxiety in Older Adults,” on Friday, April 21, from 12 to 1 p.m., at the Wells Public Library, 1434 Post Road, in Wells. Brandon Rivard, PA-C, will discuss the differences between depression, anxiety, and dementia, how these disorders present themselves in the aging population, their effects on memory and thinking, and how to mitigate the effects.
The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and complimentary boxed lunches will be available “to go.” Lunches should be consumed outside the building rather than in a congregate setting inside the library. In keeping with hospital policies, masks will be supplied for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status.

York Hospital partners with Birthly to offer virtual childbirth education classes
YORK, Maine — York Hospital announces the continuation of Childbirth Education classes provided to its patients. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital temporarily paused all childbirth education offerings. In partnership with Birthly, York Hospital is offering valuable, educational resources, to their patients in the comfort of their own homes beginning Monday, April 3.
Through the partnership, York Hospital’s patients are now able to access a variety of childbirth and infant care classes online. All classes are live, which means patients will have the opportunity to connect through a live video feed with certified and experienced childbirth educators. Birthly educators will provide interactive teaching on a variety of top-of-mind topics and patients will have dedicated time to ask questions. York Hospital patients will be provided with a code to access these classes at a 50% discount.
Classes currently offered include Early Pregnancy Preparations, Prenatal Education Bootcamp (English and Spanish), Coping and Comfort, Breastfeeding 101 (English and Spanish), as well as Newborn Care (English and Spanish). Since each class type is offered multiple times a month, patients now have more flexibility in choosing a time that fits their schedule and can attend classes anywhere virtually via their laptop, tablet, and other mobile devices.

Mental health public policy discussed in latest Heads Up Dartmouth Health webinar
LEBANON – Dartmouth Health has published the latest webinar in its series, Heads Up: A Year-Long Mental Health Awareness Journey. This month, expert panelists discuss the topic “the current state of mental health and the path forward.” The video can be viewed at the Dartmouth Health YouTube page.
This segment features Will Torrey, MD, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Holly A. Stevens, Esq., Director of Public Policy, National Alliance on Mental Health, New Hampshire chapter (NAMI NH), and Matthew Houde, JD, Vice President of Government Relations, Dartmouth Health. Together, they discuss the current state of the mental health system in New Hampshire and the country, and areas of federal and state public policy that can be improved.
Torrey said the biggest difficulty facing residents and providers is timely access to high-quality care.
The panelists also discussed the importance of robust policies to aid in workforce development and retention, increase Medicaid reimbursements to cover costs and help close the gap in uncompensated care, as well as recent policy successes, such as the new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 988, and permanently continuing much of New Hampshire’s emergency expansions of telehealth coverage and reimbursements for outpatient clinical mental health treatment.
