Thanksgiving is around the corner, and while many turkey sales have already been gobbled up by shoppers who pre-ordered their birds back in October, there are still some options available for those who prefer to wait.

The Newport Daily News called up five stores in and near Newport County to see what was available, and at what price. While farms like Helger’s in Tiverton have already sold out of turkeys, there are still frozen and fresh birds for sale at the Newport Stop & Shop on Bellevue, the Middletown Shaw’s on East Main Road, the Fall River, Massachusetts, Market Basket on William S. Canning Boulevard, and, for those who prefer to support smaller local enterprises, at Clements’ Marketplace in Portsmouth and Tom’s Market in Tiverton.

The Daily News asked about prices for fresh and frozen Butterball brand turkeys as a baseline comparison, and also inquired about each store’s cheapest alternative for both fresh and frozen whole turkeys. Where possible, additional notes about deals and discounts have been added alongside the basic pricing information.

Fresh Butterball turkey

Stop & Shop – $1.99/lb.; 20-lb bird costs approximately $40.

This is a sale price – Stop & Shop customers must purchase $25 worth of groceries in addition to the turkey in order to qualify, and are limited to two birds.

Shaw’s – $2.99/lb.; 20-lb bird costs approximately $60.

Clements’ offers a 50% discount for customers who pre-order by Friday 11/18. This means a pre-ordered fresh 20-lb bird would cost around $35.

Frozen Butterball turkey

Clements’ manager Shane Murray said almost all of his frozen turkeys were spoken for with a high volume of pre-orders, but he still has 8-10 lb. “Little Butterball” birds available without a pre-order. He also said any leftover birds will go in his display cooler on Friday, so shoppers may find a turkey discounted to $2.99/lb. if they go check on Friday. He advised shoppers to pre-order by mid-October for future Thanksgiving turkey purchases from Clements.
