Haven't received your Indiana taxpayer refund yet? Here's what you should know.

The Indiana Statehouse on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

If you haven't received your $125 one-time automatic taxpayer refund payment from the state yet, you aren't alone.

Indiana taxpayers are supposed to receive a collective $545.3 million this summer due to higher than expected state revenue numbers during the 2021 fiscal year. According to the Department of Revenue more than 2 million Hoosiers have already received their direct deposit, totaling just more than $250 million.

That means, about half of the Hoosiers who qualify still have yet to receive their refund.

Who qualifies for the refund?

Any Indiana resident that filed a tax return for the 2020 tax year is eligible. That is limited to any Hoosier who filled out the following forms:

  • Form IT-40, Indiana Full-Year Resident Individual Income Tax Return.

  • Form IT-40PNR, Indiana Part-Year or Full-Year Nonresident Individual Income Tax Return, if a person was married and filed jointly and was an Indiana resident for the entire year.

  • Form SC-40, Unified Tax Credit for the Elderly, if a person resided in Indiana for more than six months in 2020.

How will I receive the money?

Indiana residents will be paid either by check or through direct deposit, depending on how they filed their 2021 tax returns this year. Hoosiers who provided their banking information on their 2021 tax return by the deadline should have already received their money.

For anyone who qualified for a tax-filing extension, the Department of Revenue will continue to issue direct deposits as tax returns are received and processed.

Later this summer, the state auditor will be mailing checks to any qualified Hoosier who did not submit their banking information when filing their 2021 tax returns. Natalie Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Revenue said that timeline is "dependent on supply-chain issues affecting the paper industry."

What do I do if I don't get the refund?

On or around September 1, the Department of Revenue will release guidance on its website regarding what Hoosiers can do if they think they qualified for the refund but did not receive it.

More money could be coming

Gov. Eric Holcomb called lawmakers make for a special session which will convene on July 25 in order to send inflation relief to Hoosiers. Under Holcomb's plan, each Hoosier would receive an additional $225, if approved by lawmakers.
