Archaeologists uncover ancient ceremonial carriage near Pompeii
Archaeologists have unearthed a unique ancient-Roman ceremonial carriage from a villa just outside Pompeii, the city buried in a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The almost perfectly preserved four-wheeled carriage made of iron, bronze and tin was found near the stables of an ancient villa at Civita Giuliana, around 700 metres (yards) north of the walls of ancient Pompeii. Massimo Osanna, the outgoing director of the Pompeii archaeological site, said the carriage was the first of its kind discovered in the area, which had so far yielded functional vehicles used for transport and work, but not for ceremonies.

Stocks fall, bond rout sparks profit taking
Central banks in Asia struggled to smother a selloff in global bonds on Friday (February 26), piling pressure on their bigger peers to do more. That spooked investors who sold assets to cover deepening losses. And rushed out of crowded positions in stocks.European stocks fell on Friday (February 26) as investors booked profits in high-flying technology shares.Concerns are growing over rising inflation and interest rates on the back of a jump in bond yields. The benchmark European stock index was down over 1%.And on track to record its first weekly fall this month. While London's FTSE 100 and Germany's DAX also slipped.Earlier, Asian markets had seen even bigger declines. Japan's Nikkei index shed almost 4%. Euro zone government bonds did at least stabilise. But Germany's benchmark yield was still headed for its biggest monthly jump since 2016.Assurances from European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde and other policymakers failed to stem the rise in yields.Technology stocks bore the brunt of this week's sell-off after powering the global stock market recovery last year.

Biden, Saudi king talk ahead of Khashoggi report release
U.S. President Joe Biden told Saudi King Salman Thursday (February 25) that he would work for bilateral ties that are "as strong and transparent as possible," according to the White House, ahead of the expected release of a U.S. intelligence report on the 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The report is a declassified version of a top-secret assessment that sources say singles out the 85-year-old king's son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for approving the murder of Khashoggi in the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul.Saudi Arabia denies that the 35-year-old crown prince, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, approved the killing.Biden and Salman also discussed regional security amongst other issues. The White House said in a statement; "The two leaders affirmed the historic nature of the relationship" - but it did not mention the Khashoggi report.Biden later told reporters that the call, their first since he took office last month, was "good."A Saudi news agency statement also sounded a positive note. It said Salman congratulated Biden on the presidency and that the pair stressed "the depth" of bilateral ties and the "importance of strengthening the partnership."A source told Reuters that the report's release was awaiting the call. It was also delayed as the crown prince underwent surgery earlier this week. The release of the declassified report on Khashoggi's death is part of Biden's recalibration of U.S.-Saudi relations in part over his murder. But Biden has said he wants to maintain strong ties with one of Washington's closest allies in the region.

Yellen's encore: Lending economic heft to Biden's virus plan
Viewed as an outsider to partisan politics, she now has a place in President Joe Biden’s inner sanctum, a Ph.D. economist who does the reading, knows the numbers and treats her staff as peers rather than underlings. Yellen had been at the White House to strategize about how to push through President Joe Biden’s proposed $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan — a package that could determine how quickly the U.S. economy heals, how the Democrats fare in the midterm elections and just how much Americans can trust the government to solve the nation's toughest problems. As a former chair of the Federal Reserve, Yellen carries the authority of a public servant who has already helped steer the economy back to health once and now has been called back at age 74 for an encore after former President Donald Trump declined to offer her another term as Fed chair.
