HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The professional hockey scene in Huntsville has been going strong for over 30 years, and with that comes several names that have transcended decades.

The Posa family first popped up in Huntsville when Victor Posa coached for the then Huntsville Blast in 1993, then the name reappeared when Saverio Posa helped the Huntsville Havoc win a championship in 2019.

Now, one of the Havoc’s latest signees continues to tie the family to hockey in the Rocket City.

On February 13, the Huntsville Havoc signed Benito Posa, a six-foot-one inch wing, who is the son of Victor and brother of Saverio.

Benito was in attendance when the Havoc swept rival Birmingham to win the 2019 President’s Cup, and at the time, he didn’t even think pro hockey was in his future. But now, just a few years down the line, he’s playing in the same rink as his dad and brother.

“It was electric,” said Posa of the Havoc’s 2019 championship. “At the time I didn’t think I would ever you know play pro hockey, but five years later here we are playing in the same rink, it’s pretty cool.”

Posa said he talked to several teams in the SPHL, but when Huntsville called – he knew he wanted to continue the family legacy.

“It was really a no brainer when I was talking to teams in this league and I got the call from Huntsville,” said Posa. “It was like ‘Yeah’ I got to continue the family legacy down here.”

While all family rivalries run deep, Benito says there’s no denying who the best hockey player in the family is.

“It has to be my dad,” Posa said. “We have to give credit where it’s due, he played two games in the NHL. He likes to talk about it too, he’ll remind you about it.”

The Havoc have 13 games remaining and are firmly in the playoffs if the season were to end today. Posa said the team’s mission is to win another championship, but for him personally – the goal is to get some jewelry to match his big brother.

“It’s pretty clear the mission on the team here. We want to bring home another President’s Cup,” Posa added. “I would like to have a ring that rivals my brother’s.”
