Hawk, Knights fall short in Division II District boys tennis tournament

Hiland's Garret Shoup and West Holmes Brody Schaad and James Barr took part in the Division II District boys tennis tournament, but came up short of state berths in the event that concluded at Ohio University in Athens over the weekend.

Shoup, who won the East Sectional singles title played at Dover City Park, earned a first-round bye before falling to Athens Luke Frost in the second round. Frost would go on to claim one of two state qualifying spots for the event to be played in Mason later this week.

Meanwhile, Brody Schaad and James Barr were the fourth seed from the East District. In Round 1, they defeated the No. 6 seed from the Southeast district 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in a battle that lasted more than two hours.

In the second round, they played the No. 2 seed from the Southeast in Wheelersburg.

Wheelersburg, who earned a first-round bye, outlasted Schaad and Barr 6-4, 5-7, 7-4 in a match that lasted more than three hours.

The East Liverpool doubles team of Cole Dailey and Preston Dawson qualified to the state tournament from the East District after finishing as the runner-up. They were the champs at Dover.
