Hawkins squeaks out win in state House race

TALLAHASSEE – Former Osceola County Commissioner Fred Hawkins will head to the Capitol as a state representative after pulling out a close win over Democratic opponent Barbara Ann Cady in the House District 42 race that covers parts of Osceola and Polk counties.

Hawkins initially trailed Cady by 729 votes as the early and vote-by-mail totals were published, but later took the lead as Election Day totals were revealed. The Florida Division of Elections reports he won by 1,164 votes out of 99,392 cast, or 1.2%, above the 0.5% threshold that would have triggered a recount.

No party affiliation candidate Leroy Sanchez took in 7,460 votes, or 7.5%.

Hawkins replaces former Rep. Mike LaRosa, R-St. Cloud, who was term-limited, keeping the seat in GOP hands.
