Alumni and guests of the graduates of Hayesville High School met in the elementary building, the place where the alumnus graduated, on Saturday evening, for their 83rd Alumni Banquet.

It was the first banquet held in two years due to the coronavirus. Fifteen classes were represented with 76 people in attendance.

The opening, invocation and pledge was conducted by President Richard Dilgard, who also said the benediction and led the group in singing the school song.

The oldest class in attendance was the class of 1948 with Anna Mae (Glass) Beecher being honored for the oldest alumni in attendance. She was presented with a potted plant.

Former teacher, principal and superintendent, Gene Yeater, was in attendance. He was recognized by the honored class of 1962, which David Seiss conducted and he reminisced about his class. He noted they had 26 students who graduated. Class colors were lavender and royal purple and the class flower was the orchid.

Richard Jones reported on the Hayesville/Jeromesville Scholarship fund. In 2021 two scholarships were presented, one to Megan Schwendeman and one to Oliva Traylor in the amount of $2,868 each.

The committee reported there were 47 alumni deceased since the banquet two years ago.

The committed had a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Scholarship fund. They collected $194 and Dan Parker won the $97, which he donated back to the scholarship fund.

The election of officers was conducted, and the group decided to keep the current officers: Dilgard, president; Dick Jones, vice president; Bill Glass, secretary; Barb (Sparr) Spaiid, assistant secretary; Kay (Seiss) Pauly, treasurer; Cindy (Baker) Young, assistant treasurer; and Judy (Van Gilder) Weaver, historian.

The meal was prepared by the Hillsdale Band Boosters.

Several merchants donated gifts to be given out to the alumni and guests as door prizes. Merchants who gave gifts were Subway, Eva Treats, Wendy’s, Bellstores, Hayesville Hairport, Heffelfingers, Chuy’s, The Endzone, Mifflin Dairy Bar, Farmhouse Parlor & Grill, Village Pointe Market, Brew’d Coffee & Donuts, Ole Mill Lake Co, and Oak Park.

The next banquet will be held the first Saturday of May 2023.
