Hayesville High School class of 1961 holds reunion
Eighteen classmates, spouses and guests, along with new Hillsdale Superintendent Catherine Trevathan, attended the 62nd anniversary of graduation from Hayesville High School.
President Bill glass welcomed everyone and told about past events.
Haysville and Mifflin schools consolidated in the 1930s. The class of 1961 was the first and only class to fly to Washington, DC, for its senior trip. This was possible because of many fundraisers.
Gene Yeater was principal, Harold Smith with superintendent, Rosalie Long was secretary and Earl Weikle was the county superintendent.
May 26, 1961, was graduation day at Haysville High School. The class motto was “only the educated are free,” and the flower was red and white carnation.
Travathan told of her background and family. She grew up on a farm. She began at Hillsdale Aug. 1. Travathan answered questions regarding the school.
Secretary and Treasurer Karen McCready presented her report. She also reported to members in nursing homes and read a letter from their former classmate who lives in Arizona.
Copies of two obituaries were distributed: Dr. Jerry Shank died July 15, 2023, and Dr. Stan Williams died Feb. 20, 2022.
Next year’s reunion will be held the third Saturday in August and the same officers will be retained.
