Hays County to hold 2 open houses on reducing risk from natural hazards

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Hays County said it was holding two open houses this week to hear from the public about a plan to reduce long-term risks from natural hazards.

The county said it is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan and wants the public to see the plan before it goes to the Texas Department of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for review.

Once FEMA signs off on the plan, the county said each participating jurisdiction will accept the plan and then will be eligible to apply for FEMA hazard mitigation grant funding.

Participating jurisdictions are Hays County, along with Dripping Springs, Wimberly, Kyle, Buda, Mountain City, Niederwald, Woodcreek and Bear Creek.

According to Hays County, the plan is a “comprehensive document for communities to engage in effective planning that can reduce long-term risks to life and property from natural hazards, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, winter storms, and wildfires.”

The county said the plan has been in development for about one year.

Open houses

The first open house will be held at Kyle City Hall at 100 W. Center St. on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The second will be held at Dripping Springs City Hall at 511 Mercer St. on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
