Haze enveloping Northeast Pennsylvania comes from Canadian wildfires

Jun. 6—SCRANTON — Where there's smoke in Northeastern Pennsylvania, there's fire — but in this case the flames happen to be in Canada.

A haze shrouding Northeast Pennsylvania is smoke from Canadian wildfires, according to the National Weather Service.

From Downtown Scranton, both East Mountain and West Mountain are not visible because of the smoke.

"You can even smell it. Loads of smoke being produced by Canadian wildfires, affecting air quality," the National Weather Service says on its website in a post issued Monday.

There are some clouds too, but huge plumes of smoke pouring from fires in Quebec are wafting southbound into New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania, the NWS says.

"It's not just Quebec. We are even getting smoke all the way from Northwest Canada," the NWS said.

Forecasts for this afternoon, tonight and early Wednesday in the Scranton area call for widespread haze and patchy smoke.

The smoke then should start to clear, as Wednesday night skies in Scranton are forecast to be mostly clear.
