HBO Max Will Stream All Warner Bros. Movies That Were Supposed to Hit Theaters in 2021

Exciting news: Warner Bros. will drop its entire 2021 movie slate onto HBO Max the same day as their theatrical release dates.

While many movie theaters across the country have reopened amid the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC's COVID-19 guidelines caution groups to avoid congregating inside, pretty much making personal streaming and the occasional drive-in movie moment the only way to safely enjoy new films until further notice.

According to a statement released on Thursday, December 3, new Warner Bros. movies will be available on the streaming service for a total of 31 days starting on the premiere date. After the one-month streaming period, the movie will still be available in theaters.

“We’re living in unprecedented times, which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” Ann Sarnoff, WarnerMedia Studios chair and CEO, said in a statement, per Entertainment Weekly. “No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021. With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films. We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”

Just some of the 2021 films Warner Bros. has coming up: Dune, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya; In the Heights, the Tony-award-winning musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Crazy Rich Asian's Jon M. Chu;  and The Suicide Squad featuring Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.

HBO Max was already set to stream Wonder Woman: 1984 on the same day as it hits theaters on December 25.

The best part of this news is these movies will be added to the streaming service at no additional charge to customers. HBO Max is currently available for $15/month or free for Xfinity customers.

I don't know about you, but I plan on buying a projector and the largest screen I possibly can for my private, at-home viewing of In the Heights. And when theaters are a safe option again, I'll be there.
