HBOMax's "Gossip Girl" Reboot Has Been Delayed

Gossip Girl here with some unfortunate news for Upper East Siders ready to return to a world filled with drama and headbands. The Gossip Girl reboot scheduled to premiere on HBOMax this year has been delayed. That's right, put away your invitation to the "Kiss on the Lips" party because fans will have to wait until next year before the series returns.

A ten-episode reboot was scheduled to debut later this year on HBOMax, a new streaming platform. However, according to Vulture, HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly told the publication that the series has been delayed due to COVID-19. As Reilly explained, the series, starring Savannah Smith, Tavi Gevinson, and Thomas Doherty, hadn't yet begun filming. "They hadn’t even started production yet; they were in pre-production and ready to roll,” he said.

Amid the spread of COVID-19 and ongoing social distancing guidelines, work on the series had been put on hold, and Reilly now anticipates that GG won't debut until 2021. However, even that date remains unconfirmed, as shooting and production will depend on when filming can resume.

News of a reboot was shared back in November 2019, and at the time, Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer who worked on the OG Gossip Girl, confirmed the new series would include some major changes. Although the reboot will include the return of Kristen Bell as narrator and fashion selection from the show's original costume designer, Safran said the cast would be more diverse and storylines would be more inclusive. “There’s a lot of queer content on this show,” he said previously. “It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that.”

With the reboot now on hold, fans will have to resume re-watches of old episodes, but as TikTok users have found, there's certainly still a lot to be discovered in the GG world.
