Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Horry County Schools will consider dropping K-12 virtual learning programs because of a significant failure rate. Approximately 40% of the students who chose online learning this semester are failing one or more classes, the district revealed this week. If virtual learning is discontinued, it will happen in the fall at the beginning of the next academic year. (WBTW)

  2. DHEC delays COVID-19 case numbers again. The data has been delayed since January 20. The department says there is a "data processing issue" and it is working to rectify the situation. Until the department has the correct numbers, officials do not want to publish potentially incorrect info, and therefore removed a provisional report that was online briefly during the day on Monday. DHEC apologized for the delay. (WPDE)

  3. An owl that was hit by a car and saved by Horry County Fire Rescue in December has recovered from its injuries, and was released back into the wild. The owl was discovered on Loblolly Lane in the Forestbrook neighborhood of Myrtle Beach. HCFR was called, and retrieved the bird from a tree where it had flown after being struck by the vehicle. The owl was brought to Carolina Wildlife Rehab Center, where it was nursed back to health. It was released near River Oaks Drive on Monday. (WBTW)

  4. Brad Pierro of Myrtle Beach rode his bicycle from here to Key West, Florida two years ago. While on that ride, he noticed a lot of roadside memorials were in disrepair. He's embarking on that 1,000-mile bicycle trip again and plans to light up the memorials using solar lights. Pierro is also going to film his journey for a documentary highlighting some of the memorials and the people remembered there. Pierro has a GoFundMe page set up if people want to contribute to the cost of the lights. The trip will start some time in May and takes about three weeks. (WBTW)

  5. The folks at Brookgreen Gardens announced the arrival of five otter pups in the otter exhibit at the zoo in Murrells Inlet. The pups were born during the winter storm. They need to bond with their mama for several weeks, and learn to swim, before they'll be able to be seen taking a dip in the exhibit area. (WMBF)

  • Claud-io @ Crave Italian Oven & Bar (5:00 PM)

  • Jeff James @ Duck's Cafe (6:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Myrtle Beach International Airport: We're excited to introduce Loki, our newest P.E.T.S. ambassador! Loki is a two-year-old golden retriever who is more "low-key" than mischievous and is ready and waiting to help ease your travel stress! You can catch him in the terminal in the coming weeks with his mom, Kat. (Facebook)

  • The choices nowadays are a little lean, but here's a roundup of the latest Myrtle Beach area real estate listings. (Myrtle Beach Patch) Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors reports that 2021 was a "tremendous" year for the housing market. (WBTW)

  • There are thousands of dogs and cats that need a new home and are stuck in shelters. Our area shelters on the Grand Strand do a wonderful job keeping them safe and well cared for, but they need adopters and foster parents. Here are some beautiful furry friends just waiting for a forever home or a foster family to rely on. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

  • Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: We're looking for CANADIANS who are currently visiting the Grand Strand! We'd love to spend a few minutes with you to shoot a short video interview. Please message us if you would like to participate! (Facebook)

  • Horry Georgetown Technical College: The College is seeking volunteers to participate in one-hour obstetric ultrasound sessions on select dates and times. Appointments for Spring 2022 are now available. During the one-hour session, expectant patients and their loved ones will have the opportunity to view their baby at a new stage of development while HGTC students learn important skills with a qualified Sonography Instructor. Students and faculty always make sure to send some fun ultrasound pictures home with mom. The FREE non-diagnostic ultrasounds will be offered on the HGTC Grand Strand Campus at 3501 Pampas Drive in Myrtle Beach. (Press Release Desk)

  • Telephones in downtown Myrtle Beach? It's not a throwback to the 20th century! United Way of Horry County and the City of Myrtle Beach have installed several phones in various downtown locations for emergencies and community resources. People can use the phones to either call 911 for an emergency, or 211 to get community help such as shelter, mental health assistance, prescription assistance and more from United Way. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
