Accidental shooting in Henderson County occurred during target practice, sheriff says

A 12-year-old boy in Henderson County, Kentucky, suffered a gunshot wound during "target practicing" Thursday morning and required a medical helicopter flight to Evansville for treatment, according to Sheriff Chip Stauffer.

Stauffer told the Courier & Press that a preliminary investigation determined the shooting was "accidental." Henderson County 9-1-1 Dispatch confirmed the incident occurred in the 13000 block of US 41 in Robards at approximately 9:50 a.m.

"He was air (lifted) from the scene to St. Vincent's Hospital," Stauffer said Thursday.

In a news release published Thursday evening, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office said its investigation determined the boy was accidentally shot "while target practicing in the backyard of a residence."

"The juvenile was under the supervision of an adult at the residence when he was shot," the news release states. "The juvenile was in stable condition at the time of transport."

The Courier & Press sought updated information about the shooting and the investigation from the sheriff's office Monday, but a representative said the sheriff and his second-in-command were unavailable for comment.
