Head to This Big, Quirky Festival in Small Town West Texas
Despite a population of only 1,800 people, Marfa has become one of the most-talked-about tiny towns in America, if not the most. A creative haven where ranchers and contemporary artists live side by side, Marfa is equally famous for its stunning, uninterrupted vistas as it is galleries and large-scale art pieces. An Instagram in front of the Prada Marfa installation, a sculpture version of what looks like a functioning boutique selling the fashion house’s bags and shoes, on rural US-90 has become one of the ultimate souvenirs.
Another iconic site in Marfa, El Comsico, will see the 14th Trans-Pecos Festival of Love + Music, which brings nationally known musicians, makers, and artists to the desert. Hotelier Liz Lambert’s new-age campground dotted with restored trailers, teepees, and yurts transforms into a full-scale festival with acts like Margo Price, Chicano Batman, and Robert Ellis performing under the unparalleled starry skies (This area of Texas is known for its lack of light pollution.) and Chef Lou Lambert fixes up a pig roast community dinner featuring his signature Tex Mex dishes.

This year, festival-goers will have the chance to be a part of workshops that vary from D.I.Y. postcard making, tie-dying hemp T-shirts with Jungmaven, candle making with Manready Mercantile, and water marbling with textile artist Mercedes Rex. Small-scale, but much-beloved companies like Nipomo, Filth Mart, and Bexar will be a part of the adjacent market area.
