Headed to SoCal? Caltrans making overnight I-5 Grapevine detours for landslide repair

Drivers heading to Southern California on Interstate 5, the state’s main north-south route, will face detours overnight through Sunday, the California Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The detours are part of necessary repair work on I-5 caused by a landslide that took place during heavy rainfall on the route in early April.

Southbound I-5 will be fully closed between Vista Del Lago Rod and Templin Highway from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The closure will begin at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 continue to 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Two southbound lanes will open each morning.

Traffic will be routed east on Highway 138, south on Highway 14, and back to I-5. The Quail Lake Road, Smokey Bear Road and Vista Del Lago Road on-ramps and westbound Highway 138 connector route to I-5 will also be closed. All work is subject to weather and operation reasons, said Caltrans. Northbound I-5 is not involved in the closures.

The April landslide reduced southbound I-5 in the area from four lanes to two. Road conditions can also be checked in real time at 800-427-7623 or on Twitter @CaltransDist7
