Oct. 2, 1901: “During the light storm which struck this city about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon a severeelectrical storm accompanied by wind and rain prevailed in Harris township. The big bank barnon the Charles Chirhart farm, which was considered one of the best in this part of the county,was struck by lightning and entirely consumed by fire along with a quantity of wheat and othercrops.” — The South Bend Tribune

Oct. 3, 1913: “The grotesque parade, motorcycle races and the awarding of a few more prizes for farmproduce were the chief events of to-day’s program of the farmers’, manufacturers’ andmerchants’ fall exposition. The races were the chief feature this afternoon and were witnessedby thousands of people along the course.” — The South Bend Tribune

Oct. 4, 1927: “Vivid, lifelike demonstrations in many downtown store windows will be a unique feature of thepublicity campaign planned for the ‘Have a Heart’ drive of the South Bend Federation for SocialService, which opens Oct. 24 for one week. This phase of advertising, never before attempted incharity drives in this city, will be conducted in the form of a contest.” — The South Bend Tribune

Oct. 5, 1932: “A treasure hunt was given last evening under the sponsorship of Harrison Crockett and LouisBruggner. The hunt started at the Knights of Columbus ball room and was ended at theCoquillard Golf club, where a buffet supper was served.” — The South Bend Tribune

Oct. 6, 1940: “It was appropriate and thoughtful of St. Joseph Valley lodge, No. 36, Fraternal Order of Police,to present the world famous United States Navy band, of Washington D. C., in two concertsSaturday in School field as closing features of Knute Rockne week.” — The South Bend Tribune

Oct. 7, 1953: “The basic pattern for handling automobile traffic at University of Notre Dame home footballgames this year will be unchanged, but the construction of a toll road across Northern Indianaundoubtedly will have a drastic effect on the situation in later years.” — The South Bend Tribune
