July 9, 1900: “If the desires of local electric street railway men are carried out South Bend will be connected with Niles, Mich., by electric car line before the end of the year.” — South Bend Tribune

July 10, 1913: “Another suburban addition to the north of the city is to be added in the sale for home building purposes the 60 acre tract of land on Portage avenue just north of the Kinyon flower gardens. The tract has been purchased by the Indiana Title & Loan company and it has been divided into lots to be sold by an attractive payment plan.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 11, 1921: “Unlooked for thrills were found by Andrew C. Weisburg, manager of the Oliver hotel, and Dr. Frederick C. Clapp, also of South Bend, when they went into the Canada wilds to witness wild game photography. Caught in a forest fire, the party of half dozen men was marooned for two days and nights last week, on a small island, one of 1,400 in a lake in the Abitibi region of northwestern Quebec.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 12, 1936: “Although opinion is divided it is generally agreed that Rene Robert Cavalier Sieur de Lasalle, French explorer, was the first white man to set foot on the territory of St. Joseph county. This region was an Indian paradise before the coming of the white settlers. It abounded in furbearing animals and its streams and lakes teemed with fish. The plains along the eastern bank of the St. Joseph river, south of Niles, Mich, were a buffalo resort where thousands of the animals gathered.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 13, 1943: “Gasoline will be flowing through St. Joseph county to the eastern seaboard at the rate of 230,000 barrels a day before snow flies again if weather and materials permit the maximum construction work on an eight-inch pipe line that will extend from East Chicago, Ind., to Steubenville, Ohio, where it will connect with another line reaching to Philadelphia, Pa.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 14, 1954: “Another splendid program has been devised for the 1954 St. Joseph county 4-H fair. The exhibits and the entertainment features evidently will be up to the high standard that has become familiar. Indeed a possibility is that this will be an even more memorable fair than any of the preceding ones. For years this event has been steadily improved.” — The South Bend Tribune

July 15, 1960: “Ten softball nines are paired for action in the annual city tournament starting Monday on the Central and Dodge-Exchange Park Diamonds. Tourney pairings were drawn Thursday night at a meeting of team managers in the Mishawaka office of The Tribune.” — The South Bend Tribune
