May 28, 1908: “Next Monday evening has been selected for a conference between representatives of the Chicago, South Bend & Northern Indiana and the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend Railroad companies, the purpose of which is to be an endeavor to settle the differences now existing between the two companies over the use of the tracks of the former company on LaSalle avenue by the latter.” — The South Bend Tribune

May 29, 1913: “Not less than 25 automobiles will gather at the courthouse at 9 o’clock to-morrow morning, preparatory to the start for the first day’s trip of the farm management tour to be conducted in St. Joseph county by J. S. Bordner, county expert. The tour is expected by Mr. Bordner to be unusually successful. It will be the first trip of such nature ever attempted in Indiana.” — The South Bend Tribune

May 30, 1927: “Thirty-eight years ago to-day South Bend citizens were wading in knee deep snow. Trains on the Vandalia railroad, now the Pennsylvania, were stalled because of the heavy drifting and the weather was worse for the last day of May than even the oldest inhabitant could recall. The temperature was so low that it seemed impossible the month of June was only 48 hours away.” — The South Bend Tribune

May 31, 1939: “The General Motors Parade of Progress exposition left Lagrange this morning, arriving here Monday morning. Jack Jerpe, the director, and the personnel, about 60 in all, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack W. Wainwright at the Limberlost Camps, Inc., at Oliver lake.” — The South Bend Tribune

June 1, 1947: “A United Airlines Sikorsky helicopter will stop at the St. Joseph county airport at 11:30 a.m. today en route to Chicago and will stay at the port for about an hour, United Station Manager Charles S. Mellen, announced Saturday.” — The South Bend Tribune

June 2, 1955: “Fifteen old refrigerators have been picked up by South Bend street department crews in the first week of the department’s drive to gather discarded boxes from places where children may be trapped in them.” — The South Bend Tribune

June 3, 1964: “An official of the Indiana Toll Road urged a group of Roseland businessmen this morning to consider measures to increase the economic benefits of the Toll Road to the South Bend area. Harry B. Brown of the J. E. Greiner Company, Baltimore, resident engineer at the Toll Road, spoke to a breakfast meeting of the Roseland Business Man’s Association. ‘You are in the exact middle of the Main Street of the Midwest,’ he said, ‘and it is up to you to seize the opportunity.’” — The South Bend Tribune
