Aug. 7, 1905: “In the severe electrical storm of last Saturday George Curry, Joseph Buzinski and James Tuma, employed in erecting poles for the South Bend & Western Railway company, two miles west of the city, received severe shocks of lightning and were rendered unconscious for some time.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 8, 1918: “Portage avenue, From Kenyon street north to the city limits, will be improved as a result of action taken Wednesday night by the board of public works. The proposed measure was decided upon after the Northern Indiana Railway company signed an agreement to extend its lines to the city limits within a period of two years after the end of the war.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 9, 1926: “Fire, believed to have resulted from a leaking gas connection, caused damage estimated at $600 yesterday afternoon when it virtually destroyed a building at 3214 Pleasant street, from which Lewis Powell had just moved his furniture.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 10, 1937: “Completion of diagonal runways on Bendix field, St. Joseph county airport, expected within the next 10 days, will mean immediate resumption of local service by ships of American Airlines, Carl Fites, manager of the local airlines office, announced today.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 11, 1942: “A little drama from real life with a South Bend angle was enacted on the rear platform of a South Shore train at Chicago’s Randolph street station early this morning. A father and mother were saying good-by to their son, but it was obviously a different farewell than any given him in the past, for this time he was leaving for South Bend to become an apprentice seaman in the new V-7 class at the navy training school at Notre Dame.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 12, 1954: “Rockford’s Peaches got the hits but South Bend got all the runs at Playland Park last night as the Blue Sox downed the cellar-dwelling visitors, 8-0. Blue Sox mound ace Dolly Vanderlip gave up nine hits but clamped down in the clutch to make her 11th victory of the season her fourth whitewash job.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 13, 1964: “Plans for a 90-unit town house apartment complex for the Dodge Urban Renewal Area were announced Wednesday night by the George Williams Co., North Lake, Ill. after it purchased 22 of the 25 lots which were sold at a meeting of the Mishawaka Redevelopment Commission.” — The South Bend Tribune
