Aug. 20, 1904: “Louis Salmon, the greatest full back the western gridiron has ever produced, will coach Notre Dame’s football team this year and he will arrive in the city within a short time.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 21, 1911: “Harry G. Sommers, of New York, lessee and manager of the Auditorium and Oliver opera house, has purchased the Auditorium property on South Michigan street from the Studebaker corporation and will take possession Sept. 1. Announcement of the deal was made to-day.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 22, 1926: “Approximately 10,000 persons attended the third annual field day and picnic given by the Studebaker Athletic association under the general chairmanship of R. R. Lundy, at Playland park yesterday afternoon and evening.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 23, 1937: “Behind cloudbanks, the Finsler comet Sunday night disappeared perhaps forever from naked eye view just below the red-tinted star Arcturus in the west. It was impossible to follow the comet during the last few nights due to bad weather. The comet, however, will remain visible for some time yet in telescopes.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 24, 1946: “With the opening today of a Hanover Shoe store in the new Northern Indiana Transit, Inc., building, 102 North Michigan street, Sheppard & Myers, Inc., of Hanover, Pa., starts the 88th chain store in the 46th year of their operation. The new store, which will be furnished with all modern fixtures, will feature men’s and young men’s shoes exclusively.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 25, 1957: “Neal Butcher, South Bend parcel post carrier, tried out one of the new three-wheeled, 7 ½ horsepower ‘mailsters’ under the direction of Bernard Decker, administrative assistant at the Post Office garage. Nine of the mailsters will be put into operation in the southern part of the city below Broadway sometime this week, Postmaster Granville P. Ziegler announced Saturday.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 26, 1962: “An examination of the Peace Corps’ pilot project in Chile and an interview with Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, who helped set up the project, will be presented on ‘This Is NBC News’ Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on WNDU-TV, Channel 16.” — The South Bend Tribune
