Aug. 13, 1908: “Buffalo Bill is here, [so] are the people. Col. William F. Cody, who is none other than Buffalo Bill, arrived in South Bend early this morning over the Lake Shore from Battle Creek, Mich., where two very successful performances were given Wednesday. The people came from neighboring communities to see the well known sharpshooter, scout and horseman and his congress of rough riders of the world in a reproduction of the stirring scenes of the west and an exhibition of skill in horsemanship and marksmanship.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 14, 1913: “Candidates for places on this year’s Notre Dame football team have been ordered to report for practice on Sept. 14. The official call was sent out to the men yesterday afternoon by Coach J. C. Harper, who is here to attend to some of the preliminaries previous to the starting of the season’s work.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 15, 1923: “South Bend gasoline users were not slow in taking advantage of the 5.6 cents a gallon cut in the price of motor fuel which went into effect yesterday. Managers of local branches of gasoline firms reported to-day that sales yesterday were unusually large for a Tuesday, which is generally a slack day in the business.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 16, 1934: “Queues of patient bargain hunters festooned the entrances of South Bend department stores at an early hour this morning, awaiting the opening of the doors which signified the official opening of the long-awaited Dollar day. Regular passengers of suburban bus lines became a bit disgruntled at finding their accustomed places in the motor buses already occupied, standing room at a premium and the buses running a little behind schedule, all because of the sudden increase in travel towards South Bend.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 17, 1943: “Lives of all the members of the Blue Sox team revolve around activities at the Arnold Bauer home, 1021 North Meade street. The four girls who live here, the gathering place of the entire group, are constantly welcoming surprise visits from their teammates.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 18, 1954: “The Studebaker Corp. and Packard Motor Car Co. began working on the final details of their merger today after gaining overwhelming stockholder approval of the project Tuesday.” — The South Bend Tribune

Aug. 19, 1964: “James D. Barnes, 2633 Hampton Rd., won the fourth place trophy in an invitational water skiing tournament at LaPorte for 24 of the top slalom skiers from throughout the state. Barnes, 38, a member of the Spray Riders, Inc., of Mishawaka, won the senior men’s division of an open tournament held in Mishawaka two weeks ago and was third in that division in a state meet last month.” — The South Bend Tribune
