Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship to celebrate new building with special service

Sep. 30—BEMIDJI — After around 30 years of moving from place to place to hold their Sunday services, members of the Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship finally have a place to call their own.

"We've really had to move around a lot, and not really ever had a permanent location," said Candy Roberts-Salter, president of the HUUF. "We finally figured out how to raise the money and build this new building."

While the building itself has been finished since July 2020, the fellowship is just now beginning to use it full time and for regular services.

HUUF will be celebrating this change with an event at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, at the new Headwaters Peace Center, at 1826 Mikrantip Road SW in Bemidji.

The celebration will include the organization's regular service, speakers and good food and company afterward.

"This is the first time we're using the building full time ourselves," Roberts-Salter said. "We're pretty excited about finally, after two years of having this brand new building, being able to be together and see each other more."

Everyone is welcome at the event, and this new building won't just be a place for HUUF. One of the fellowship's goals with its construction was to truly create a community space that everyone is welcome in.

Part of the plans for the building is to have it used by other organizations as well and to host a variety of events and gatherings.

"We're really hoping for it to be a community resource," Roberts-Salter explained. "It really isn't just a church, it's here for other folks who may need a space to use. That's part of our mission of being open and welcoming in the community at large."
