Healing House merges with La Casa Inc.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — La Casa Inc. is merging with Healing House, located in Deming, New Mexico, effective July 1. Both organizations have the same mission — to provide comprehensive services, including emergency shelter, in order to diminish domestic violence and abuse in all forms.
The merger with Healing House, which will now be named La Casa Healing House, will expand La Casa’s services beyond Las Cruces and Doña Ana County to Deming and Luna County. Healing House has a 17-bed shelter in Deming, providing a full array of services 24/7. With the merger, all Healing House staff will become employees of La Casa.
Healing House has been managed by Luna County, which, through a transfer agreement, has handed over responsibility for these services to La Casa, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. La Casa has been providing services for domestic violence survivors in Doña Ana County since 1981, and has grown to become one of the largest providers of such services in the state of New Mexico.
With the number of domestic violence incidents rising along with an increase in the severity of these incidents, the demand for services has become ever more urgent. By pooling the resources of La Casa and Healing House, La Casa hopes to leverage its impact and be able to reach even more affected New Mexicans.
“Merging Luna County's Healing House with La Casa is truly a bittersweet event. While Luna County will be disappointed to see some of our staff and management of this program leave, we also understand that the government is not best suited to operate a facility like this,” said Chris A. Brice, Manager, Luna County. “We are excited that La Casa, with such an exemplary record of running domestic violence shelters, has agreed to step in and keep this vital community service going. Luna County is committed to ensuring the long term success of La Casa in this new venture and will continue to provide support as needed."
