Cardiovascular rehabilitation program meets highest standards of patient care

GOSHEN — Goshen Heart & Vascular Center’s cardiovascular rehabilitation program was recently recertified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The rehabilitation programs help people with heart and vascular problems, such as heart attacks, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure and peripheral artery disease, to recover faster and live healthier. Programs include exercise, education, and counseling and support for patients and their families with the goal of improving the quality of life for patients and their families. The AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.

Classes

SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class “Driving and Dementia” from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 21 in the Care Partner Academy. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer. SOUTH BEND — RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., will offer the following “Living Well with Cancer” classes. All classes are free and open to cancer patients, survivors, their families and caregivers; pre-register for all classes by calling 574-287-4197.

• Seated Strength — 10 a.m. Aug. 21 and Aug. 23. Strength building class that may utilize light weights and bands while seated or with a chair for support. Class size is limited.

• Pressed Flower Lanterns — 1 p.m. Aug. 21.

• Gentle Yoga — 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Floor yoga class suitable for all levels of experience. Bring your own mat. Class size is limited.

• Chair Yoga — 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and Aug. 24. Modified poses that can be done from a seated position and with a chair for support. Class size is limited.

• MELT — 1 p.m. Aug. 22.

• Men’s Support Group — 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

• Massage — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 23.

• Reiki — 2 p.m. Aug. 23.

• Dominoes — 2 p.m. Aug. 23.

• Yarnwork — 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 24.

• Bountiful Tomatoes! — 1 p.m. Aug. 24.

• Personal Training — 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24.

BUCHANAN — “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls” is designed to reduce the fear of falling and improve activity levels among older adults. The program includes eight two-hour classes and enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity levels, making small changes to reduce fall risks in the home, and exercise to increase strength and balance. The Buchanan Area Senior Center will offer this class from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, 20, 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25; and Nov. 1. The book fee is $20, and registration and payment are due by Aug. 31. NORTH LIBERTY — “Food Allergies 101,” presented by Purdue Extension, is a 60-minute program that teaches participants about the basics of food allergies by defining a food allergy, how to identify the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, listing the most common food allergens, reviewing ways to prevent an allergic reaction, and providing resources for further reference and education. The program will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the St. Joseph County Public Library, North Liberty Branch, 105 E. Market St. Registration is required at sjcpl.libnet.info/events.
