Activities

ELKHART — Enjoy hiking a different park trail every month, make new friends, get a little exercise, and glimpse the bounty of nature at every curve and corner. The Hiking Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month through October. On Aug. 15, meet from 6 to 7 p.m. and take a 2.33-mile hike at Boot Lake Nature Preserve, 51430 County Road 3. There is no fee for the Hiking Club. Maximum participants per event is 50 people. Follow current CDC guidelines. Register at elkhartcountyparks.org/events/ by Aug. 14.

SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class “Maintaining Me! ADL’s” from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 14 in the Care Partner Academy. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer. SOUTH BEND — RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., will offer the following “Living Well with Cancer” classes. All classes are free and open to cancer patients, survivors, their families and caregivers; pre-register for all classes by calling 574-287-4197.

• Head and Neck Cancer Support Group — 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

• Seated Strength — 10 a.m. Monday and Wednesday. Strength building class that may utilize light weights and bands while seated or with a chair for support. Class size is limited.

• Zen Coloring — 1 p.m. Monday.

• Gyna Girls — 4:30 p.m. Monday.

• Gentle Yoga — 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday. Floor yoga class suitable for all levels of experience. Bring your own mat. Class size is limited.

• Chair Yoga — 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and Aug. 17. Modified poses that can be done from a seated position and with a chair for support. Class size is limited.

SOUTH BEND — Downtown South Bend Inc. will offer free yoga, Zumba and more every Saturday through Aug. 26. The program is held at the Gridiron, 122 S. Michigan St. The drop-in classes are free and open to all ages and skill levels. Participants should dress in appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a mat and adequate fluids, and will be required to sign a waiver for the season. Free parking is available on the street and in the Leighton Parking Garage; enter off Jefferson Boulevard. Saturday’s class includes 8 a.m. Yoga; 9 a.m. Zumba; 10 a.m. Scrumptious Movement. ELKHART — Elkhart County Parks will offer Yoga in the Park from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 for ages 14 to 17 years old and from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 for ages 18 and older, at the Cobus Creek Shelter, Cobus Creek County Park, 30680 County Road 8. Join registered yoga teacher Amanda for an hour of empowering yoga. All skill levels welcome. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water and a yoga mat. BUCHANAN — Join the Buchanan Area Senior Center, 810 Rynearson St., for a Medicare Series that will offer information on Medicare Fraud, Medicare Basics, and Medicare Information and Assistance. Programs are provided by the Area Agency on Aging Inc.

• Medicare Fraud: Learn what to look for, phone call phishing, mailer scammers and commercials not providing all the information at 1 p.m. Aug. 15.

• Medicare Basics: Learn about Medigap vs. Advantage, Medicaid eligibility and Medicare.gov navigation to help untangle the steps to find what meets your health needs at 1 p.m. Aug. 22.

• Medicare Information and Assistance: A free, confidential and easy way to gain information on in-home care resources, housing help, meal needs and transportation needs at 1 p.m. Aug. 29.

GOSHEN — Goshen Health is offering free advance planning seminars every third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Advance care planning is a process to document the medical care you want to receive if you would become unable to communicate your wishes. The seminar will explain the role of an advance care plan, what to include in a plan and how to designate a healthcare representative. Participants will have the opportunity to schedule a private appointment to complete their document. The seminar is held in the Arbor Conference Room at Goshen Hospital, 200 High Park Ave. Registration is required at GoshenHealth.com/Plan-Ahead or by calling 574-364-2288. Participants are encouraged to bring a family member or close friend who will be involved with their healthcare decisions. The next seminar will be held Aug. 15.

SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Public Library has partnered with AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist to help participants learn more about HIV and AIDS. “HIV 101” will be presented from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in the Alligator Room at the Centre Township Branch, 1150 E. SOUTH BEND — The 2023 Logan Walk & Roll will be held Sept. 9 at the Potawatomi Zoo, 500 S. Greenlawn Ave. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. with the Walk & Roll beginning at 8:30 a.m. This is a 1-mile wellness walk on paved paths for easy accessibility. A Family Fest will follow the walk from 9 to 11 a.m. offering fun activities, vendors and breakfast from Chick-fil-A. The cost is $25 until 5 p.m. Aug. 24 and $30 after. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at Logan Center, 2505 E. Jefferson Blvd. Registration is online at logancenter.org/walkandroll.

MISHAWAKA — Michiana Hematology Oncology will hold its next monthly Breast Cancer Survivor Support Group meeting from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at 5340 Holy Cross Parkway. The group is led by Dr. Zon, physician emeritus of MHO. This month’s guest speaker is BJ Wray German, breast cancer coach, presenting “What Breast Cancer Cannot Do to Me.” All are welcome, including current patients, family members and cancer support advocates.
