Drop off expired meds at Senior Expo

PLYMOUTH — If you have expired medicines cluttering up your cabinets, then bring them to the Senior Expo between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. today (Oct. 19). The Life Enrichment Center, Marshall County Solid Waste and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department have partnered to provide a secure disposal of expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines. Medications can be in their original containers or in a securely sealed bag. Sharps must be taken directly to the Marshall County Jail or the Recycle Depot at 1900 Walter Glaub Drive. The Expo is being held at Plymouth High School, 1 Big Red Drive.

Free mammograms available at select Franciscan Health locations

MICHIGAN CITY — Women in need of mammograms in Northwest Indiana may be able to receive them free of charge thanks to a grant to Franciscan Health from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust. The program provides screenings for the uninsured, underinsured and those with high-deductible insurance plans. The grant funding covers screenings, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies for individuals in households with gross incomes of up to 300% above the poverty level. Patients must live in Indiana and be screened by phone to see if they qualify. SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class “When is it time to move?" from 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 23 in the Care Partner Academy. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer. SOUTH BEND — RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., will offer the following “Living Well with Cancer” classes. All classes are free and open to cancer patients, survivors, their families and caregivers; register for all classes by calling 574-287-4197.

MISHAWAKA — Battell Community Center, 904 N. Main St., offers the following fitness classes. Please note that fees and charges are subject to change without prior notice.

• Cardio Drumming — Combines dance and fitness. All skill levels are welcome. 6:30 p.m. Mondays; 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost: $5 per class.

• Middle Eastern Dance — Fitness and fun for all ages. Level 1 (beginners), 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays; Level 2 (intermediate/advanced), 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays; Level 3 (approval from Ruby); 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays. For cost and information contact Ruby at 574-315-1915.

Events

SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Department of Health will offer free lead screening, for children ages 1 to 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 in Study Room L105 at the St. Joseph County Public Library, 304 S. Main St. Risks of lead poisoning for a child include: living/spending time in homes built before 1978, siblings with elevated blood lead levels, family members working in high-risk environments that include working with metals or lead-based items, household members with a high-risk hobby (working with stained glass, refurbishing antiques, etc.)

Vaccinations

GOSHEN — Goshen Physicians will hold drive-thru flu shot clinics this fall. All community members, age 10 and older, are eligible. The shot is free with most insurance plans. Cash, check and credit card will also be accepted. Self-pay is $40 for the low dose and $107 for the high dose. No prior registration is necessary. Bring a photo ID, insurance card and payment method. Parent/guardian signature is required for those 17 and younger. Dates and times are subject to change for inclement weather.

• Oct. 24 – 6 to 8 p.m., Goshen Physicians Family Medicine/North Webster, 301 N. Main St., Suite 121, North Webster.

• Nov. 4 – 10 a.m. to noon, Goshen Physicians/Parkway at 17, 851 Parkway Ave., Elkhart.

BENTON HARBOR — Corewell Health Lakeland, 100 W. Main St., will hold community drive-thru flu shot clinics from noon to 4 p.m. every Tuesday through Friday until Dec. 29. Participants, 18 years or older, remain in their vehicles the entire time. No appointment is needed. Lakeland Care will administer the quadrivalent flu vaccine and the high-dose flu vaccine for those age 65 years and older. There is no cost to the participant with most insurance; bring insurance card. The cost is $37 for the traditional vaccine or $74 for the high-dose vaccine (cash or check only; credit cards not accepted).
