EXETER – Core General Surgery in Exeter welcomes Rong Tang, MD, a fellowship-trained breast surgeon with expansive women’s health expertise.

Dr. Tang received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the Medical School of the University of South China in Hunan, China. She completed a plastic surgery residency at Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, and Hunan Cancer Hospital in Changsha, China. Dr. Tang went on to complete a fellowship in breast surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass., as well as a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

“I have always had a passion for women's healthcare,” says Dr. Tang. “After graduating from medical school, I was first trained in plastic surgery and completed my surgical residency in China. I moved to the US for more in-depth and impactful women’s care. I completed an OBGYN residency at Rochester General Hospital and a breast surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital where I also conducted extensive breast cancer research. Though it took a few more years than a typical career path of most breast surgeons, I could not be happier with my choice of training and in learning multiple ways to support women in their health care choices.

“My areas of clinical expertise include nipple-sparing mastectomies, skin-sparing mastectomies, lumpectomy margins, benign breast disease management, and the use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols that decrease post-operative pain and recovery time. My special interest also includes utilizing plastic surgery techniques to improve cosmetic outcomes while achieving optimal oncologic goals. In addition to breast surgery, I am also passionate about gynecologic and obstetric care for breast cancer survivors.”

As a breast surgeon, Dr. Tang will work closely with the oncology team of Exeter Hospital’s Michael and Jeanne Falzone Center for Cancer Care. The Center’s radiation oncologists and medical oncologists/hematologists, as well as nurse practitioners, are Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center providers who work onsite in Exeter. All breast cancer patients receive care through a multi-disciplinary clinic, which brings together a collaborative team of physicians and specialists to review each patient’s case and provide a collective plan for the best course of treatment. Dr. Tang will provide the surgical expertise for the breast cancer clinics.
