Richland Public Health announced Friday that Sarah Humphrey has resigned from her position as health commissioner "to pursue other opportunities."

The board of health accepted her resignation on Wednesday and appointed medical director Dr. Daniel Burwell to serve as interim health commissioner. Burwell is also the Richland County coroner.

The board of health’s personnel committee will begin to search for a successor in the weeks to come.

According to Richland Public Health's website, Humphrey was named health commissioner on Jan. 9, 2020, a couple of months before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to coming here, Humphrey had served as commissioner of the Ashland County Health Department since 2016. While health commissioner, Humphrey facilitated the collaboration of Ashland City Council and the Ashland County General Health District to reduce costs and services redundancy to create one health department in Ashland.

Humphrey also directed all budgetary and human resource responsibilities in Ashland.

She succeeded Martin Tremmel in Richland County.

In addition to her public health experience, Humphrey served as fiscal officer for the West Holmes County Fire District from 2009 through 2018, managing human resources, financial affairs and the budget for fire and EMS.

Humphrey graduated from Ohio State University in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in animal science. She earned a master's of public health degree from the University of South Florida in 2015.
