Healthy Living: Vitamin D

(WHTM) — Vitamin D is essential for our bodies, especially when it comes to bone health. But many people do not get enough of the so-called “sunshine vitamin” in the winter.

“There’s less sunlight typically during wintertime. People are wearing more layers during wintertime, and as a result, there’s less exposure to the sunlight,” Dr. Matthew Goldman with Cleveland Clinic said.

Although it can be hard to get enough outside during the winter, Goldman said eating Vitamin-D Rich Food like salmon or mushrooms can help. However, it may not be enough for everyone.

Symptoms of deficiency can include fatigue, bone pain, and muscle weakness.

At the end of the day, many people do not know they are getting enough Vitamin D. That is why Dr. Goldman says that talking to your doctor about testing may be important- especially for infants and those who are over the age of 65.

Healthy Living: Strokes

“High risk of osteoporosis or porous bones, weak bones. Higher risk for fractures and breaks, especially with a slip and fall,” Dr. Goldman said.

Dr Goldmna added that your primary care provider can help you assess your risk and determine if a Vitamin D supplement is needed.
