Heart-A-Rama is back for its 51st year in Two Rivers. Here's what to know about the show, and more news in weekly dose.

MANITOWOC - “Heart-A-Rama’s Holiday Road” is this year’s theme for the comedy/variety show Heart-A-Rama.

Shows will be April 27-29 and May 4-6 at the J.E. Hamilton Community House, 1710 W. Park St. in Two Rivers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food served prior to the show.

The Best Seat in the House — a decorated toilet seat — is auctioned at 7:10 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Directors Jim Pautz, Tom Bartelme, James Gordon, Lisa Novachek, Fritz Dramm and Jennifer Rogler have written skits and musical numbers that tie to real and not-so-real holidays, including Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Garbage Day.

The show will also feature the Heart-A-Rama News, along with music from the Heart-A-Rama Pit Boys. Biff Hansen returns as emcee.

2023 marks Heart-A-Rama’s 51st year of entertaining audiences and raising more than $3 million for the American Heart Association Wisconsin, along with donations of automated external defibrillators to public gathering places throughout Manitowoc County. Tickets are on sale at the Piggly Wiggly stores in Manitowoc and Two Rivers, and online at heartarama.org.

Lakeshore Technical College spring open house April 26: Lakeshore Technical College will host a spring open house at its Cleveland campus from 1 to 6 p.m. April 26.

Adults and high school students can tour the college’s state-of-the-art facilities while exploring more than 70 degree programs.

College representatives will be available to answer questions about application steps, learning options, how to pay for college and variable start dates, as well as academic, financial and personal support resources.

LTC graduates approximately 800 students each year. Its most recent survey shows associate degree graduates reported a median salary of $59,899 within six months of graduating.

Manitowoc mayor and Pete the Cat to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day: Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels will be on hand at LaDeDa Books, 1624 New York Ave., Manitowoc, April 29 to help celebrate Independent Bookstore Day. He will read a story at 11 a.m. and chat with children about his job.

Popular children’s storybook character Pete the Cat will teach everyone the Pete the Cat Boogie. Mayor Nickels and Pete will pose for pictures and sign autographs.

Gift certificates will be hidden throughout the store and discounts will be given to those who sing a song or correctly answer a trivia question.

NAMI Manitowoc County’s next Wellness Group meeting May 1: NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Manitowoc County will hold its next Wellness Group meeting at 6 p.m. May 1 at Painting Pathways Clubhouse, 1226 Washington St., Manitowoc.

This month’s theme is “Be Kind to Your Mind” as part of May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

The meeting will include updates from the NAMI Wisconsin Annual Conference, an open discussion, plus appetizers and ice cream. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Lakeshore Wind Ensemble concludes concert season May 6: Lakeshore Wind Ensemble will conclude its 2022-2023 concert season with “An American Salute” at 7:30 p.m. May 6.

The show is a musical tribute to the country’s great composers, veterans and freedom. It will be at the Capitol Civic Centre, 913 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc. Tickets can be ordered at the Capitol box office, by calling 920-683-2184 or going online.

Featured music will include Irving Berlin’s “America”; “Black Granite,” honoring Vietnam veterans; selections from six Star Wars films by John Williams; and the world premiere of a composition by Manitowoc’s own Joey O’Connor, “What These Waters Remember.”

O’Connor, a 2022 Manitowoc Lincoln High School graduate, is in his first year at Lawrence University in Appleton, where he studies music education, composition and trumpet under Dr. Jessica Jensen, professor John Daniel and Dr. Adam Gaines.

O’Connor spends much of his free time composing and has earned more than 20 awards for his jazz, wind ensemble, orchestral, choral and small-ensemble compositions submitted to the Wisconsin School Music Association Composition Competition. He has also performed and conducted several of his compositions with ensembles in Manitowoc and has also been commissioned by the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra. He composes film scores for independent film companies and in 2022 won Best Original Score in the Prodigy International Film Competition for his work on Cole J. Sheldon and False Take Film’s production of “Little Hummingbird.”
