Heart-A-Rama hits $3M mark, Two Rivers plans 9/11 remembrance and more news in weekly dose.

MANITOWOC - It took a couple extra years because of COVID-19 postponements, but Heart-A-Rama’s 50th season in 2022 raised $106,400 for the American Heart Association with more than $10,000 staying in Manitowoc County to purchase AEDs for organizations in need.

And, Heart-A-Rama (titled “Heart-A-Rama Strikes Gold” in 2022) literally struck gold by surpassing the $3 million mark in fundraising for the American Heart Association.

Heart-A-Rama began in 1971 and raised $1,367.96 after a two-night run. In 2000, it reached the $1 million mark. In 2009, it hit $2 million. And this year, it reached the $3 million mark.

“Special thanks go to those patrons and businesses who bought tickets and advertising for the 2020 show, which was postponed due to COVID, and donated those purchases, along with buying again for the 2022 shows,” Heart-A-Rama said in a news release. “In addition, Heart-A-Rama raised thousands of dollars on the ‘Best Seat in the House’ auctions, which greatly contributed to the goal of reaching $3 million, so extra thanks go to those bidders. Finally, Heart-A-Rama thanks all those who attended this year’s shows, supporting the cause through their purchases of food, clothing, auction items and more!

“Of course, Heart-A-Rama wouldn’t be possible without the countless volunteers who work on the stage, in the band, in sales and in the background,” the news release said. “Every volunteer matters to Heart-A-Rama, and that is why the organization has thrived for 50 years! If you, in any way, have contributed to Heart-A-Rama this year and in the past, thank you! You gotta have heart!”

► Leadership Manitowoc County deadline is Aug. 22: Applications are open for The Chamber of Manitowoc County’s 2022-23 Leadership Manitowoc County class.

The program’s mission is to serve as a community engagement program that brings together potential leaders who will be encouraged, motivated and prepared to assume more influential roles as leaders of Manitowoc County.

The program includes an orientation, history and heritage, team-building, human services, government, environment and health, education and diversity, public safety and the local economy.

Those wishing to participate must commit to sessions on the third Wednesday of each month, September through May, with a typical day running 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Program fee is $720, or $327 for a non-profit participant. Class size is limited.

Applications are due Aug. 22.

► LTC students finish among tops in nation at SkillsUSA Competition: Three Lakeshore Technical College students who placed first in the annual SkillsUSA state-level competition advanced to the 2022 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Competition, placing eighth and ninth in their areas of expertise. More than 12,000 students competed.

Ryan Wendt, who graduated in May from the CNC (computer numerical control) technician program, competed in CNC turning specialist. He finished in eighth place.

Brent Budnik and Brittany Wehrmann, both of whom graduated in May from the electro-mechanical automation technology program, competed as a team in mechatronics. They finished in ninth place.

The competition took place June 20-24 in Atlanta. Winners from each state in more than 100 career event categories were invited to compete.

Serving as advisers to the students were Mark Lorier, machine tool instructor, and Douglas Hamm, dean of business, technology and hospitality.

SkillsUSA competitions challenge students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupation programs to apply their classroom learning in a competitive environment. Students focus on using their technical skills along with communication and troubleshooting skills as they compete against students from other technical colleges at the state and national levels.
