Heart of Stark: Nearly 100 student scholarships available

Heart of Stark

In partnership with The Repository, every Monday, Stark Community Foundation is highlighting positive happenings in our community. Here’s to Good News Mondays!

Many students find it financially challenging to invest in themselves and their future with an advanced education.

Thankfully local individuals, families and businesses see the value of students achieving their educational dreams and have partnered with Stark Community Foundation to make those dreams a reality.

As one of our community’s major sources of scholarship support, the foundation and its family of donors offer nearly 100 scholarship opportunities to benefit students from Stark and Carroll counties. Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year are now available, with the deadline for most being April 1.

Students can apply for the majority of scholarships through the foundation’s General Scholarship Application. This one application will automatically apply students to scholarships for which they qualify and suggest others they are eligible for that require additional essays or information.

A few scholarship opportunities fall outside of the April 1 deadline and require a separate application. To determine eligibility for these standalone opportunities, students can take a short eligibility quiz found on the apply page of the foundation’s Online Scholarship Portal.

More than $600,000 in scholarships were awarded to local students from generous individuals, families and businesses last year — including the late John G. and Betty J. Mick. In 2005, John, a retired Timken Company control analyst, and his wife, Betty, established a scholarship fund through Stark Community Foundation to benefit Stark County students who have been accepted into engineering programs in Ohio.

Although both John and Betty have passed away, their scholarship fund has provided over $575,000 in financial assistance since inception to help aspiring engineers further their education. Last year alone, the Micks’ passion for learning and the next generation of Stark County leaders ensured 19 students received scholarship assistance from their fund.
