'Our hearts are broken': Flagstaff police investigate man accused of torturing, killing cats

A shelter in Flagstaff accused a man of adopting, torturing and killing cats. Police confirmed officers are investigating the situation.

Ark Cat Sanctuary, an animal shelter based in Parks, Arizona, posted to their Facebook on Tuesday with an urgent message for the Flagstaff community.

"We can't say a lot right now, but we have been notified that there is a man in Flagstaff who is adopting, torturing and killing cats. Brutally and purposefully," Ark Cat Sanctuary wrote in a Facebook post. "Local shelters and rescues have his photo and details and he won't be adopting from any of us ever again. Cat(s) we love are dead. Police are investigating."

Sgt. Jerry Rintala with the Flagstaff Police Department said that several interviews have been conducted and the suspect has been identified and interviewed, but the case is still pending further investigation at this time.

As of Wednesday morning, Ark did not answer the Arizona Republic's request for comment.

"Our hearts are broken," Ark wrote in their Facebook post.

Ark is asking members of the Flagstaff community to keep their cats safe and inside and for people in Flagstaff not to give away cats right now. If members of the community need to rehome a cat, Ark asked them to make arrangements with a local rescue or shelter who will take the cat in. If they cannot find a local shelter or rescue, Ark said to call them at (928) 613-2090 and they will do their best to help find a safe home for the cat.
