Heat advisory: Extreme heat expected in Corpus Christi area this weekend

South Texas is in for another hot weekend as heat indices reach up to 114 degrees in some areas.

The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi issued a heat advisory for much of South Texas on Friday. The advisory will remain in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., though the heat is expected to continue through the weekend.

Hot and sunny weather will continue next week. Wednesday will bring a 20%  chance of showers and thunderstorms.

To stay safe in the heat, the National Weather Service recommends limiting outdoor activities, drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, wearing light clothing and sunscreen, and working outdoors early or very late in the day.

Those looking to escape the heat can find cooling centers throughout Corpus Christi. Cooling centers open this weekend from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. include:

  • La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche St.

  • Ben F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Drive

  • Owen R. Hopkins Public Library, 3202 McKinzie Road

  • Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, 654 Graham Road

  • Lindale Senior Center, 3135 Swantner Drive

  • Garden Senior Center, 5325 Greely Drive

  • Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library, 5930 Brockhampton Street

The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority will provide transportation to city cooling centers through Sunday. Those wanting to ride fare-free should tell the bus operator they're traveling to the nearest cooling center.

CCRTA recommends the following cooling center routes and stops. Each stop is less than 0.6 mile from the cooling center locations.

  • Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, 654 Graham Road — Take Route 29F or Route 4 (Flour Bluff) to stop No. 660 Waldron at Graham

  • Lindale Senior Center, 3135 Swantner Drive — Take Route 29 (Staples) to stop No. 1065 Staples at Texan Trail

  • Garden Senior Center, 5325 Greely Drive — Take Route 5 (Alameda) to stop No. 463 Alameda at Troy

  • Owen R. Hopkins Public Library, 3202 McKinzie Road — Take Route 27 (Leopard) to stop No. 1375 Leopard at McKinzie or No. 1451 Leopard at Sammons

  • Ben F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Drive — Take Route 21 (Arboleda) or Route 23 (Molina) to stops No. 122 of No. 136 Greenwood at Horne

  • La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche St. — Take Route 6 (Santa Fe/Malls), Route 19 (Ayers) or Route 23 (Molina) to stop No. 322 Tancahua at Comanche

  • Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Library, 5930 Brockhampton St. — Take Route 26 (Airline/Lipes Connector) to stop No. 2529 Lipes at Lipes Apts or No. 2548 Lipes at Kitty.

Nueces County is also launching the following cooling centers this weekend:

  • Banquete Community Center, 4359 Fourth Street, Highway 44, Banquete — Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Hilltop Community Center, 11425 Leopard St. — Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • David Berlanga Community Center, 1513 Second St., Agua Dulce — Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Driscoll Community Center, 200 E. Sixth St., Driscoll — Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Bishop Community Center, 102 W. Joyce St., Bishop — Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Keach Family Library, 1000 Terry Shamsie Blvd., Robstown — Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Bishop Library, 115 Ash St., Bishop — Monday through Thursday, 1-6 p.m.
