Heat advisory in Tompkins County: See high temps, where to stay cool

With temperatures expected to soar into the mid-90s, the National Weather Service Binghamton has issued an urgent heat advisory for Tompkins County and the surrounding regions.

Issued Wednesday morning, the advisory states the heat index is expected to climb to 95 degrees in Tompkins, Tioga, Chemung, Steuben, Yates, Schuyler and Broome counties. The advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, warns the hot temperatures and high humidity "may cause heat illnesses to occur."

The New York State Department of Health has provided a list of free cooling centers throughout the state. Residents are urged to call the centers in advance to check the specific times the centers are open.

For those hoping for a relief from the scorching heat, the NWS outlook for the Ithaca area forecasts temperatures above 90 degrees through Sunday, with a high of 95 on Saturday. Next week, temperatures should drop into the 80s on Monday.
